Global Data Pod: Inflation Monitor: Another squeeze, with broader pressures

Nora Szentivanyi is joined by Abiel Reinhart and Raphael Brun-Aguerre to discuss the latest global inflation developments. Inflation pressures broadened in September, with both core goods and services inflation moving higher alongside firmer food and energy prices. Risks to the outlook are shifting once again as oil prices fell sharply this week, while a historically intense El Niño is starting to pass through to food prices in parts of EM. We discuss the latest US and Euro area inflation signals and the implications for inflation forecasts and monetary policy. Global Data Pod Weekender: A good foundation

Incoming news reinforces the message of strength for global growth last quarter, albeit somewhat mixed with the US leading the way. Moderation is expected this quarter but robust profit growth should be the catalyst for a rotation to labor markets perking up. Downside risks can been seen in rising energy shocks, fading wealth effects, and waning fiscal impulses. Central banks remained on hold this week but signaled broadly that hikes are on deck before year-end. Global Data Pod Weekender: Once more unto the breach

Another surge in energy prices alongside business hiring that has yet to perk up materially raises the same old question: How long can consumers keep spending without real purchasing power? As long as growth is resilient, aided by strong profits and a shift to business spending, central banks will focus on sticky elevated inflation. Next week’s Fed, ECB, and BoJ will stay on hold but single hikes to come, while the BoC starts a hiking cycle.
