Group Chat: Was the Holocaust Cringe? and more...

Such great questions this week! Like - should you be insulted if you overhear your boyfriend’s mother calling you a shiksa (even if you are one), and what’s up with Chabad pool parties? We jump from pink billboard signs to big feelings about the Holocaust to what to ask your Tinder dates before meeting and why you need a security guard when making Challah- clearly it’s risky business. In this episode: - Ruth or an H name? A personal Hebrew-name identity crisis. - Do Jews need protecting—or do we just need better billboards? - His mother called you a shiksa. Now what? - How soon is too soon to ask a date about his future children’s Hebrew school? - How the Orthodox do pool parties - Chabad, Twitter, and the myth that Orthodox Jews live under a rock. - The kosher Super Bowl halftime show: Miami Boys Choir, anyone? ___ Thank you for being an Ark+ subscriber. Group Chat: Israelis and American Jews: Jocks vs. Nerds? And more…

Are Orthodox Jews and other American Jews living in different universes? Are Israelis and American Jews one big, happy Jewish family—or more like the jocks and nerds of the tribe? This week on Chosen People Problems we’re tackling your burning questions about Jewish culture clashes, communal divides, and whether we have more in common than we think. Plus, we’ll help you survive your first Orthodox Shabbat dinner without committing a social faux pas, offending your hosts, or accidentally signing up for a lifetime of invitations. - Why some Orthodox communities are eager to reach out—and others would rather keep to themselves. - Are Israelis the jocks and American Jews are the nerds? Or the other way around?. - How October 7 changed the way Israelis and diaspora Jews see each other. - Flowers, kosher wine, handshakes, bathroom lights: the dos and don’ts of being a model guest for a Shabbat dinner. And one very important rule: maybe don’t take an edible before dinner. ___ Thank you for being an Ark+ subscriber. 𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝘂𝘀? Don’t worry, we won’t judge you. Group Chat: When Going to Shul Feels like Going to Church

Is Halloween a wholesome American childhood tradition or a deeply weird celebration of skeletons and graves? What’s it like to go to High Holiday services that just feels a little…different? And when someone demands that you defend Israel, do you owe them an explanation of Netanyahu—or a defense of the Jewish people’s right to exist? In this subscriber-only edition of The Group Chat (we’re sticking with the name for now), we answer your questions about Halloween, Jewish history, Israel, and what happens when an Israeli tries to do Yom Kippur in New York. 𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲: - We debate whether Orthodox Jewish kids are missing out on Halloween—and why ChayaLeah has strong feelings about rich progressives who flee town instead of giving (full size) candy to the neighborhood kids. - If you could have coffee with anyone in Jewish history, who would it be? We consider Maimonides, Golda Meir, Irving Berlin, Eve from the Garden of Eden, and Sam Harris. - - One of us would also like a guided meditation. The other would like to scroll Twitter. - Do Jews outside Israel have a responsibility to defend Israel’s government? We get into why defending Israel is bigger than defending Netanyahu, why you shouldn’t have to apologize for your Jewish identity, and why “I don’t support Bibi” isn’t always the answer people are looking for. - What does Yom Kippur look like when you’re a secular Israeli visiting New York? Yael recounts a holiday of synagogue hopping, YouTube sermons, security guards, and a last-minute search for somewhere to sit until the fast ends. ___ Thank you for being an Ark+ subscriber. Group Chat: Your Toddlers Are Better Off Watching Heated Rivalry Than Miss Rachel

In this subscriber-only edition of The Group Chat (yes, we’re still workshopping the name), we answer your questions about everything from Marco Rubio’s unexpected hotness to the difference between Satmar and Neturei Karta. We also get into the harder stuff: finding out about October 7th on Shabbat despite not having a phone, navigating the constant stream of anti-Zionist hate, and why Jewish history might be the best antidote to despair. In this episode: - We ponder the very Talmudic listener question: Who is the hottest friend of Israel? - Why the distinction between Satmar and Neturei Karta matters — and why we have strong feelings about people who use anti-Zionist Jews to score political points. - What happens when you’re observing Shabbat and the world is falling apart? Chaya Leah tells us how she found out about October 7th — and how friends make sure she doesn’t miss the big news. - Is taking a break from your phone the secret to staying sane? How do you keep your faith when anti-Zionist hate seems to be everywhere? We talk Jewish history, the people who give us hope, and why we’re confident the Jewish people will be okay. ___ Thank you for being an Ark+ subscriber. Do you have something you want to ask us? For Heaven’s Sake is a weekly podcast presented by Ark Media and the Shalom Hartman Institute, hosted by Donniel Hartman and Yossi Klein Halevi. The podcast draws its name from the Jewish concept of machloket l’shem shemayim, “disagreeing for the sake of heaven,” which is exactly what takes place each week as Donniel and Yossi discuss the moral aspects of topics affecting Israel, world Jewry, and the future of Zionism.

Im a big fan of Dan and Call Me Back, I had never heard of these two until Ark media picked up their podcast. There are so few podcasts out there right now that show intelligence and humor at the same time, particularly when discussing serious topics. The relationship between the two hosts is the secret sauce- on paper they are mismatched, yet its so obvious from listening to them how much they care for and respect each other, while poking fun at the same time. Theyn truly enjoy and appreciate each other’s opinions and values, even though they are so different. Both are articulate and smart, yet funny and irreverent, even silly at times. I love it! So refreshing.
I never miss it

Chaya Leah and Yael are by turns charming, thoughtful, funny, and irreverent. They manage to snag great guests, with whom they always seem to click!
