Talkin' Tony: "The Cutting Edge" with Ali Golub (Andorks: Detours)

We know that Tony Gilroy made Andor, but what made Tony Gilroy? Well, his parents. But more metaphorically, what was the route that Tony Gilroy took through his Hollywood career to end up on Ferrix? How did his journey shape him to make a Star Wars prequel to prequel one of the greatest shows of the 21st century? We think that’s a route worth of a DETOUR! So we’re excited to launch Andorks Detours: Talkin' Tony, where we’ll periodically make our way through Tony Gilroy’s filmography from start all the way until his present day offerings. That means we’re starting all the way at the beginning, with his film debut as the writer of 1992’s “The Cutting Edge”, and we’re excited to have our friend and writer, Ali Golub, to skate along with us! Listen along to our Star Wars podcast as we talk about the cult-classic sports rom-com about an ice hockey player and a figure skater who team up to win Olympic gold… but also end up winning each other’s hearts. Together we discuss Tony’s early life, investigate his arrival in Hollywood, and discover how Doug Dorsey and Kate Moseley have their own rebellion – against social norms, that is! Toe pick! 🔗 Check out Ali's substack "Dictator of Taste" at https://alibrooke4ever.substack.com. 🧭 Want more Andor and/or Andorks? Want to hear the rest of this episode? "The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire" with Dan Salgarolo & Mike Van Gorder (Andorks: Detours)

Watching ANDOR leads to a lot of logistic questions about the Star Wars universe, like: how does the Empire produce all these weapons? What is the parliamentary procedure for the Galactic Senate? Why did the New Republic fall apart? What if somebody wrote a version of William L. Shirer "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" but about Palpatine? Finally, we've found those answers in "Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire" by historian Dr. Chris Kempshall. The canon(!) in-universe history book explains exactly (and in EXTREME depth) what is happening behind in the background between the Clone Wars and somehow Palpatine returning. Folks, there is MUCH to talk about. That's why we're excited to welcome back two Star Wars superfans, Dan Salgarolo and Mike Van Gorder, to explore the book's revelations and lore ramifications. Strap in. 🧭 Want to hear THE FULL EPISODE? A Sunless Space with Maggie Mae Fish ("One Way Out" Part 5)

Get out your flashlights, because we’re going to a sunless place. And we hear it's full of... g-g-g-ghosts?!? It's time to witness Luthen Rael’s seething monologue to Lonni Jung down in the dregs of Coruscant. And to help us break the scene and speech down, we're honored to be joined by actor, writer, and video essayist, Maggie Mae Fish! Together we say goodbye to Episode 10, discuss growing up amongst Republicans, discover there's a Hutt version of Truman Capote in Star Wars canon, draw parallels between Luthen and Darth Vader, debate whether there are Edible Arrangements in space, deliberate Shakespeare influences, and of course, provide LOTS of Stellan Skarsgård talk. 📺 Watch Maggie's video essay "Investigating "All Her Hault" Horror" on her YouTube channel at @MaggieMaeFish 👋 Follow Maggie on on Instagram at @maggie.mae.fish, on Bluesky at @maggiemaefish.bsky.social, and on X at @MaggieMaeFish 🧭 Want more Andor and/or Andorks?
