    Chico Smalls is a junior software engineer in Irving, Texas, building AI features on top of systems he does not own. When a routine model swap changes the behavior of a feature he spent weeks refining, the decision exposes something he has been feeling for months. The cloud models are better. The local models are his. Episode One introduces the central tension of Build Small: the tradeoff between capability and dependency, convenience and control, rented intelligence and owned infrastructure. Chico begins experimenting with a local model on his own hardware and realizes that the gap between the two sides is not theoretical anymore.
