Being a school counselor as a millennial in 2026 is definitely something to see, and I can assure you there's never a dull moment. It has certainly been a journey, and I'm learning a lot about myself- also learning that maintaining grace at work is a discipline. I'll be honest, there are things that I wish someone would have told me going into this role.     I may talk a lot of shit about my job, but if there's one department that has never steered me wrong and has helped me evolve both professionally and personally, it is ESE. Misconceptions about ESE teachers portray them as "babysitters" for kids with severe disabilities, when in fact, they are a team who provide levels of academic and behavioral interventions to help those with SPECIFIC learning disabilities. Our public school system was designed to serve a very limited number of students, those of the correct gender, race, ability, and socioeconomic status. Join me and my colleague Kristen, as we talk about serving students in flawed system, grounding ourselves in the midst of daily chaos, and practicing inner work in order to be the best version of ourselves and be a sponsor for change.
