    Halton Police Make Arrests in Copper Thefts

    The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) has made an arrest and laid multiple charges following an investigation into a series of copper thefts in Milton and Halton Hills. Since the beginning of 2026, multiple copper thefts have been reported to police in Milton and Halton Hills. These incidents involve telecommunications lines being cut down and copper cable being stolen from utility poles. The stolen copper is then sold for cash at scrap yards. Each theft results in significant damage, costly repairs, and service outages for rural residents. In response to these thefts, investigators from 1 District launched Project Element in April 2026. On June 6, 2026, police responded to a fire in the area of Eighth Line and 5 Side Road in Milton, where they located a suspect burning the insulation off stolen copper cable in preparation for its sale. The suspect fled the scene at a high rate of speed and evaded arrest. On June 9, 2026, the same suspect was arrested. As a result of the investigation, Stewart Winney (41) of Milton has been charged with: Mischief Under $5,000Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000Dangerous Operation of a Motor VehicleFlight from Police OfficerTrafficking in Property Obtained by Crime (two counts)Theft Over $5,000Fail to Comply with Release OrderWinney was held in custody pending a bail hearing in Milton. Investigators continue to work to identify additional suspects connected to these thefts.
