A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (HBO Max) Season 1, Episode 5 (Penultimate Episode) Episode Title: “In the Name of the Mother” Directed by: Owen Harris Written by: Hiram Martinez & Ti Mikkel and Ira Parker Summary: The trial of seven begins. In the first charge, Aerion knocks Dunk off his horse. In a series of flashbacks to Dunk’s childhood, he and his friend Rafe scavenge from a battlefield. They return to Flea Bottom in King’s Landing and pickpocket from Alester, a City Watchman. Dunk and Rafe attempt to buy passage to the Free Cities in Essos, but cannot afford it. Alester corners them and takes their money. Rafe steals Alester’s dagger, but he notices and slits her throat. Arlan emerges from a tavern and kills Alester, saving Dunk, who then follows Arlan on his travels. In the present, Dunk duels Aerion on foot until both men collapse from injury. After Dunk falls unconscious, Aerion declares him dead. Egg begs Dunk to get up, and the crowd chants for Dunk as he stands. Dunk and Aerion resume their duel until Dunk gets the upper hand. Aerion yields and withdraws his accusation. In the aftermath, Beesbury and Hardyng are confirmed as killed. Dunk pledges fealty to Baelor. Raymun and Pate help Baelor remove his helmet, which Maekar struck with his mace during the trial, revealing a fatal wound. Baelor collapses from his injury and dies in Dunk’s arms. The jousting sequences are shot with brutal realism. Armor feels heavy. Impacts feel dangerous. The episode underscores a central thesis of Martin’s work: nobility is aspirational, not guaranteed.     Wonder Knight Traveling from One Problem to the Next

He passed peacefully on February 11, 2026, with his wife, Kimberly, and their six children by his side. Van Der Beek’s breakout role on Dawson’s Creek helped shape a generation of teen storytelling on television, and the show’s honest exploration of adolescence made him a familiar presence to millions of viewers. After the series ran from 1998 to 2003, he continued working across television and film in a wide range of roles, from the high school football drama Varsity Blues to camera-savvy self-parody on Don’t Trust the B–– in Apartment 23 and crime procedurals like CSI: Cyber. Ratings: Out of 5 Here’s a Note For You… Get Out Darryl: 3.75/5 Brian: 3.8/5 A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (HBO Max) Episode 1 – “The Hedge Knight” This premiere introduces Dunk (Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (the boy who becomes his squire), setting up the tone and stakes for the series. It takes place about 100 years before Game of Thrones and focuses on a smaller-scale story full of character and humor rather than sweeping war and politics. Here’s what happens: Dunk buries his mentor, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, and takes his sword, shield, and three horses as he heads toward the Ashford tourney, hoping to make his name and find work. At an inn, he meets a young bald boy who asks to be his squire. After initially refusing, Dunk ultimately accepts him and names the boy Egg. At Ashford, Dunk tries to enter the tournament but learns he needs someone reputable to vouch for him. He seeks out knights who knew Ser Arlan, but nobody will put their name on the line for a wandering hedge knight. Along the way we see the rough, earthy humor and grounded Westerosi world the show is leaning into (including some decidedly human moments missing from prior franchise entries). Episode 2 – “Hard Salt Beef” In the second episode, Dunk’s quest to enter the Ashford tourney continues and the story expands slightly into the world’s wider politics and personality. Key beats: Dunk spends much of the episode telling other knights about his mentor Ser Arlan, trying to get someone to vouch for him so he can compete, but keeps getting brushed off. Egg helps by pointing out the unfairness of Dunk needing permission when he’s already a knight, showing how their dynamic is evolving. Members of House Targaryen arrive at the tourney — princes including Baelor, Maekar, and Aerion — and their presence adds weight to the event. Dunk overhears a conversation about missing Targaryen children and uses the moment (and a bit of boldness) to appeal directly to Prince Baelor to vouch for him. Baelor does remember Ser Arlan and, while not lavish in praise, quietly ensures Dunk’s name is added to the tournament list. Dunk and Egg also start to settle more into the tourney rhythm — from watching performances to joining in games — as Dunk grapples with what legacy and honor really mean in this world. This episode deepens the relationship between Dunk and Egg, introduces more of Westeros’s nobility (in a relatively casual, grounded way), and frames Dunk’s struggles not just to fight but to matter. This chapter introduces a new Na’vi culture shaped not by water or forest, but by fire, ash, and survival in a brutal volcanic region of the moon. These clans challenge everything Jake Sully and Neytiri believe about what it means to live in balance with Pandora. As tensions rise between Na’vi factions and the ever-encroaching human presence, the film shifts from a clear-cut nature-vs-invaders narrative into something far more morally complex. What begins as an opportunity of a lifetime slowly reveals itself to be something far more disturbing. As the mentorship deepens, the film peels back the glossy surface of fame and success, exposing a culture that treats athletes as assets rather than people. Training pushes beyond discipline into control, blurring the line between motivation and manipulation. The closer the protagonist gets to his dream, the more he begins to lose his sense of self.
