    The Cross You Never Asked For

    Send us Fan Mail In this homily for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, we reflect on the mystery of the Cross and what it means for the suffering we encounter in our own lives. Christ did not simply become the helpless victim of suffering. He willingly journeyed toward the Cross out of love for us, accepting suffering and death so that humanity might be reconciled to God and brought toward the Resurrection. As followers of Christ, we also encounter crosses that we did not choose: illness, loss, disappointment, difficult relationships, uncertainty, and the many consequences of living in a fallen world. There is nothing inherently good about suffering itself, but through faith, even involuntary suffering can become something spiritually transformative. The Christian response is not to pretend that suffering feels good or that we wanted it. We can honestly say, “Lord, I do not want this,” while still asking Christ to teach us through it, strengthen us within it, and transform what we did not choose into something that draws us closer to Him. The Cross is never the end of the Christian story. On the other side of the Cross is the Resurrection. Our spiritual lives are filled with these small deaths and small resurrections as we gradually learn to surrender our own will, trust God, and become more like Christ.     The Invitation You Cannot Afford to Ignore

    Send us Fan Mail In this homily, we reflect on Christ’s parable of the wedding feast and the invitation God continually extends to each of us. The King prepares a great banquet and invites His people to come, yet many refuse. Some are simply too preoccupied with the ordinary things of life, while others violently reject those who bring the invitation. In the same way, God calls us into communion with Him—but He does not force us to respond. How often does God invite us to prayer, to worship, to serve another person, to repent, or simply to spend time in His presence, only for us to decide that something else is more important? But accepting the invitation is only part of the Christian life. Christ’s parable ends with the mysterious image of the wedding garment. The Fathers speak of this garment as love and virtue, but we can also understand it as being “clothed with Christ.” The Christian life requires us daily to put off the old man—our selfishness, passions, and fallen desires—and to put on the new man in Christ. We are called not merely to enter the Church, but to be transformed by the grace of the Holy Spirit until we can say with St. Paul: “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” — Galatians 2:20 God is generous. He continues to seek us, call us, and invite us into communion with Him. The question is how we will respond—and whether we will allow Him to transform us.     You Can’t Take Any of It With You

    Send us Fan Mail Everything we have—our time, money, talents, bodies, homes, families, careers, and abilities—is a gift from God. Christianity teaches us that these things are not ultimately our possessions, but gifts entrusted to us for a time. In this homily, Fr. Theophan reflects on Christ’s parable of the vineyard and what it means to live as a faithful steward of God’s gifts. The Lord does not ask us to account for gifts we were never given. He asks what we have done with what He has entrusted to us. This calling extends from the parish to the “little church” of the home and into every part of our lives. Our time, wealth, abilities, and relationships are meant to bear fruit through repentance, prayer, love, service, and faithfulness to Christ. Eventually, everything we possess will pass away.     What Happens When Christ Disrupts Our Comfortable Life

    Send us Fan Mail In this homily, we reflect on Christ's encounter with the rich young man and a difficult question at the heart of the Christian life: What are we unwilling to give up in order to follow Christ? The rich young man had kept the commandments and genuinely desired eternal life. Yet when Christ asked him to sell what he possessed, give to the poor, and follow Him, he went away sorrowful. His wealth had become more than something he possessed—it had become something he could not imagine surrendering. We face the same danger. Wealth, career, status, comfort, family, accomplishments, habits, and even our own sense of identity can become attachments that compete with Christ for the highest place in our lives. Sometimes we want to love and worship God while quietly asking Him not to disrupt the life we have built for ourselves. But following Christ inevitably requires sacrifice. It requires us to empty ourselves, surrender our passions, and be willing to endure discomfort for the sake of something greater. “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” — Matthew 19:21 Our ultimate identity cannot rest in what we own, what we accomplish, or how the world defines us. As Christians, our identity must be found first and foremost in Jesus Christ.     The Image of Christ Impressed Upon Our Souls

    Send us Fan Mail In this homily, we reflect on two great feasts of the Church: the Feast of the Holy Mandylion, or Holy Napkin, and the Dormition of the Mother of God. The image of Christ impressed upon the Holy Napkin gives us a beautiful image of the Christian life. We are called to have the image of Christ increasingly impressed upon our own souls through prayer, fasting, almsgiving, Scripture, worship, and works of mercy. Because we are made in the image of God, the Christian life is ultimately about restoring and conforming that image to Christ. Our goal is not merely to identify ourselves as Christians, but to become people through whom others can encounter Christ. The saints show us what this looks like. The Mother of God, in particular, lived her entire life in service to her Son and presented Christ to the world through her obedience, holiness, and love. As Christians, we carry a particular responsibility in the way we speak, act, work, and treat those around us. Whether through great acts or ordinary interactions, our lives should become conduits of God's grace so that those who encounter us may encounter something of Christ Himself. May the image of our Lord Jesus Christ be deeply impressed upon our souls, that we may become faithful disciples and bear His presence into our families, our workplaces, our parish, and our communities.     Seeing Christ and Serving Others: The Example of St. Herman of Alaska

    Send us Fan Mail In this homily, we reflect on the Feast of the Transfiguration and the Christian calling to behold Christ and be transformed by His uncreated light. The life of St. Herman of Alaska gives us a practical example of what this transformation looks like. While St. Herman is remembered for miracles and his deep life of prayer, he is also remembered for something much more ordinary: serving those around him. He cared for orphans, taught children, advocated for indigenous people who were being abused, counseled families, worked with his hands, preached the Gospel, and served those who were vulnerable and in need. The Christian life calls us both to contemplation and to service—to seek Christ in prayer and silence, while also bringing His love to our neighbors through concrete works of mercy. May the prayers and example of St. Herman of Alaska help us to draw closer to Christ and become servants to those who need us. Christ is in our midst!     The Secret to Inner Peace in a Distracted World

In this Sunday's homily, Fr. explores one of the most dramatic miracles in the Gospels: Christ walking on the water and St. Peter stepping out of the boat in faith.     When You Have Nothing Left to Give, Give It to God.

Whether it's raising a family, caring for others, battling sin, or just trying to keep up with life's demands, many of us eventually reach the end of our own strength. In this homily, Fr. Theophan reflects on the life of St. Jacob of Alaska, whose tireless missionary labors seemed impossible by human standards, alongside Christ's miraculous feeding of the five thousand.
