Tell Me About The Birds And The Bees And The Dinosaurs (Episode 677)

It is a busy, wild week at the movies as Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy review 11 of the best and worst of them in quite the divide in the lineup. They replay their thoughts on a recovery drama from Sundance (Union County). A kidnapped woman is told she is infected with something deadly (Hellcat). Kids took a road trip believing their band is going to open for Green Day (Nimrods) while Kristen Stewart & Alia Shawkat are in a stoner comedy (The Wrong Girls). Willem Dafoe is a Greek billionaire with family issues (The Birthday Party) plus Jeff Daniels & Jared Harris have their own issues as Reagan and Gorbachev (The Brink of War). Sunny Sandler handles the pressure of a school musical and an ill mother (Don’t Say Good Luck) while Jane Schoenbrun humorously connects sex and violence through reality and fantasy (Teenage Sex and Death At Camp Miasma). Matt Johnson directs a coming-of-age version of Anthony Bourdain (Tony) and Matthew McConaughey is a beekeeper reconnecting with his foster child in the unique new film from the director of The Vast of Night (The Rivals of Amziah King). Finally, Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor’s neighborhood is connected to prehistoric times in the Amblin-coded tribute from the director of It Follows (The End of Oak Street). Ice Cream, Cookies and a Rom-Com To Purge (Episode 675)

After a week off the Friday reviews are back in what looks to be a jam-packed August. Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy do a little catch-up to get Steve’s thoughts on the new Spider-Man and Erik’s on the dumped M3GAN universe film (Soulm8te). They have a pair of documentaries to talk about including the latest from the great Penny Lane about an owl that escaped from the Central Park Zoo (Wild Inside) and the Girl Scouts annual sale through the eyes of the labor force (Cookie Queens). There is a comedy about a Jewish summer camp (The Floaters). Mysteries are abound when a lord takes a stand against a warlord in 16th century Japan (The Samurai and the Prisoner) and a strange storm keeps a family from leaving their house (The Last House). Eli Roth is back with some sinister child mayhem (Ice Cream Man) as are the Broken Lizard gang with the characters that put them on the map (Super Troopers 3). Finally, can you make a rom-com set on the evening when pre-marital sex is legal (One Night Only)? The duo have questions. 6:30 - Review Catch-Up 12:29 - Soulm8te 20:30 - Wild Inside 27:30 - Cookie Queens 38:09 - Ad Break 40:09 - The Samurai and the Prisoner 51:44 - The Floaters 1:01:50 - The Last House 1:17:50 - Ad Break 1:19:50 - Ice Cream Man 1:31:06 - Super Troopers 3 1:40:51 - One Night Only CLICK ON THE FILMS TO RENT OR PURCHASE AND HELP OUT THE MOVIE MADNESS PODCAST OR BUY FROM MOVIEZYNG Be sure to check out Erik’s Weekly Box Office Column – At Rotten Tomatoes Critics’ Classics Series – At Elk Grove Cinema in Elk Grove Village, IL Chicago Screening Schedule - All the films coming to theaters and streaming Physical Media Schedule - Click & Buy upcoming titles for your library. If You’re Not First, You’re Sick. Yeah I Said It! (Episode 674)

The beginning of each month always seems to be slow for physical media but Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski have some choice titles for you, especially if you ever wanted to see James Cagney and Mickey Rooney do Shakespeare. A couple hit comedies from Universal get a 4K upgrade as does one of Christopher Nolan’s favorite movies. You can also see the Todd Haynes film that helped put Julianne Moore on the map and one of the great films about defending the First Amendment, as timely today as it was 30 years ago about a time a couple decades before then. 4:20 - Criterion (Safe 4K) 13:17 - Warner Archive (A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935), Presenting Lily Mars, Macao) 32:59 - Universal (American Pie 2 (4K), Little Fockers (4K)) 47:06 - Sony (Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (4K)) 56:58 - Arrow (The People vs. Larry Flynt (4K)) 1:15:29 - New Theatrical Title on Blu-ray (Exit 8) 1:16:37 - New Blu-ray Announcements Be sure to check out Erik’s Weekly Box Office Column – At Rotten Tomatoes Critics’ Classics Series – At Elk Grove Cinema in Elk Grove Village, IL Chicago Screening Schedule - All the films coming to theaters and streaming Physical Media Schedule - Click & Buy upcoming titles for your library. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Episode 673)

Time for another special episode as Erik Childress is joined by comic book expert, Erik Laws, to break down the latest entry in the Tom Holland Spider-Man Universe. After perhaps reaching a peak with No Way Home, the series has a new director and an opportunity to rebuild in more ways than one. The dynamic Erik duo discuss what works and what doesn’t work about the film. What is The Punisher’s role in all this and does he even belong? Literally, what is Sadie Sink’s role and does her mystery reveal add or detract from the future of the MCU? There is a lot to cover from the action to Holland & Zendaya’s chemistry in another super-sized look at the latest from Marvel. I Want Your Sects (Episode 672)

A bit of a super-sized week of physical media (box sets will do that to you) but one worthy of appreciation and curiosity. Thankfully there are a number of very economical (in length) classics from the film noir era to appreciate. If you don’t already know one of the big plot twists of the ’70s sci-fi era you get your chance. You get one of the best films from the respective careers of Mario Bava and Elvis Presley. There is some early Wes Craven and late Tobe Hooper. Rock Hudson and Doris Day’s classic rom-com gets an upgrade. A brat packer become a serial killer (no, not Andrew McCarthy). WE GOT ONE of our Why-Is-This-Not-On-Blu-Ray titles, a classic farce from the 1980s. Plus, Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill is edited into one singular complete vision. Arrow (Soylent Green (4K), The Outfit (1973)) Warner Archive (The Keyhole, Bonnie Scotland, Crime Wave) Kino (Brit Noir Collection III, King Creole (4K), The Cop in Blue Jeans, Deadly Blessing (4K)) Vinegar Syndrome (The Mangler 4K) Severin (A Bay of Blood (4K), Disco Italiano, Music Machine) Universal (Pillow Talk (4K)) Alliance (Micki & Maude, Relentless ) Lionsgate (Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair (4K)) TV (Stranger Things (The Complete Series) (4K), The Paper: Season 1) NEW (The Devil Wears Prada 2, Pressure (4K), HappyEnd, In the Grey, Is God Is, Mortal Kombat II (4K), A Poet, Suspended Time) CLICK ON THE FILMS TO RENT OR PURCHASE AND HELP OUT THE MOVIE MADNESS PODCAST OR BUY FROM MOVIEZYNG Be sure to check out Erik’s Weekly Box Office Column – At Rotten Tomatoes Critics’ Classics Series – At Elk Grove Cinema in Elk Grove Village, IL Chicago Screening Schedule - All the films coming to theaters and streaming Physical Media Schedule - Click & Buy upcoming titles for your library.
