    Lalkar writers | 1 July 2026 Burnham’s role will be to continue putting Britain onto a war footing via austerity, militarisation and repression, while presenting himself as a ‘good bloke’ doing a ‘tough job’. With the media having gone all-out to present Burnham as a ‘left-leaning’ closet socialist, the path is open for the trade unions to hold him up to workers as the best they are likely to get. Bad actors, reactionary media commentators and politicians manipulating reports of sexual violence by racialising the information and associating it with the immigrant communities in Britain who are victims of imperialism in their own countries. By adopting such a framing, these bad actors and their ilk are attempting to divert attention from the real institutional and economic failures of our system onto migrants. This is just one of the many problems that are pinned on to migrants; others include: overstretched services, falling wages, deteriorating living standards, et cetera. What is it that makes war inevitable in the era of global monopoly capitalism? And why is repression such an important part of the war drive? What are the signs that the system is in crisis, and how can we tell that its rulers are not in quite such a strong position as they would have us believe? We also discussed the anointing of Andy Burnham as (unopposed) Labour leader and Britain’s next (unelected) prime minister. What has this process revealed about the ruling class’s agenda at home and abroad? And why is it that an apparently ‘left’ Labour government is the preferred vehicle for carrying out the most brutal austerity at home and combining that austerity with ever more rabid and bloodthirsty warmongering abroad? Ultimately, we must learn the necessary lessons, get up off our knees and start organising ourselves for a serious fight-back. While the war-hungry monopoly banksters remain in charge, our lives are only going one way – and our children’s prospects with them.
