    What's My Next Step, God?: Small Community | Pastor Julie Hamilton

    Faith was never meant to be a solo project. Pastor Julie Hamilton closes What's My Next Step, God? by looking back over the whole series, prayer, worship, service and generosity, and finding the thread that runs through all of it: every step has been a step deeper into relationship. She opens Hebrews 10:24-25, written to believers so worn down by persecution that they were ready to walk away from their faith. The author sounds like a coach on the sideline: don't give up, stick together, encourage one another. Then she tells the story of a Gasparilla 5K, a table of Krispy Kreme donuts at the turnaround, and a sister who went back so the other wouldn't sit down before the finish line. From the early church in Acts 2:42-47 to John Wesley's "There is no holiness but social holiness," Julie makes the case that we become more like Jesus side by side, not on our own. She names three purposes behind every small community at New Hope: discipleship for maturity, fellowship for belonging, and service for mission. Then she asks where your own group sits, and what might be missing. It ends on the question the series has asked all along: what's your next step, and who's taking it with you?     What's my next step, God, in serving others? | Rev. Vicki Harrison

    Too old. Too young. Too busy. Most of us have a reason we can't serve right now. Rev. Vicki Harrison has a one-line answer for all three, and you won't love it. This week in What's My Next Step, God?, she takes you into the room in John 13. Jesus and His disciples sit down to eat, and nobody is there to do the lowest job in the house, washing feet that are caked with the dust and filth of the road. So Jesus gets up, wraps a towel around His waist and gets down on the floor. Then He tells His followers to do the same for one another. You'll hear what that looked like in the first century, what it has looked like in New Hope's own kitchen, and why the early church was known for feeding widows, nursing the sick through plagues and rescuing abandoned infants. Vicki walks through six marks of Christ-centered service, each with a question worth asking yourself: are there tasks you think are beneath you? Do you serve in your own strength? Is serving an occasional thing, or part of how you do life? Then she hands you a set of stairs and asks you to find yourself on them, and name your next step.
