This is superbly-crafted audio journalism, but I have too say, it seems slightly amiss that they don’t feature any tape with the actual residents of East New York.
I get that it’s as much a profile of Kevin H. as it is an exploration of the neighborhood, but the whole “It’s terrible, it’s a mess, this horrible thing happened while I was here” starts to get tired around episodes 3 and 4. I found myself really wanting more voices in the story, and the sensationalism of ENY’s legacy almost feels fetishized at times. Like “This is so bad and terrible, but I’m not going to feature the people who actually LIVE here,” it seems to erase them from the picture. I hope they can amend this if the series continues.
