Have you ever loved somebody so much that you started carrying things that were never yours to carry? Their debt. Their anger. Their consequences. Their lack of accountability. Their refusal to heal. And somewhere along the way, you went from helping them through a season to becoming responsible for a lifestyle they weren't willing to change. There is a difference between compassion and carrying somebody's chaos. There is a difference between supporting someone and becoming their savior. You can pray for somebody, love them, listen to them, give them resources, encourage them and genuinely want to see them become better—and still decide that you will no longer participate in the patterns that are destroying them, you, or everyone around them. Sometimes the most faithful thing you can do isn't to keep rescuing someone from the consequences of their choices... it's to finally step back and let those consequences speak. We can spend so much time trying to convince strangers to see our value that we accidentally give the people who already believed in us the leftovers. The customer who purchased. The person who referred you. The one who kept listening, kept showing up, prayed for you, gave you honest feedback, or simply chose to trust you when they didn't have to. And sometimes, we do the same thing in our personal lives—overexplaining ourselves to people who remain inconsistent while overlooking the ones who have already shown us love through their presence. So let's talk about value, reciprocity and stewardship—because fair market value isn't the same thing as human value. A donut can cost a dollar while another pastry can command a thousand. Water can come in a plastic bottle or be presented as a luxury experience. A donated piece of clothing can become couture depending on how it's presented. The marketplace can tell you what someone is willing to exchange for something, but it does not get to sit in God's chair and determine what a person is worth. Maybe it's time to stop chasing everybody else's attention and start honoring the people—and the relationships—God has already placed in your hands. Improve the presentation. Protect the access.
