In this episode, we meet Giliola Belli, the pedagogical leader for Early Childhood Education in the municipal organisation of Bassa Reggiana, Reggio Emilia, Italy. Over the past 20 years, the organisation has developed an impressive network of collaborative projects with several countries, mainly in Europe—such as Germany, England, Iceland, Spain, and Sweden—often funded by the European Union. Since 2008, the pedagogical leaders in Bassa Reggiana have been involved in an educational collaboration with both the Academy of Music and Drama and the HDK-Valand. This collaboration supports the education of students training to become pedagogical and cultural leaders in preschools and schools. Within this context, art, aesthetics, and culture have played a central role in the educational approach. The focus of this conversation is the importance of democratic processes in education, both with young children and in the leadership of teachers. Belli refers to the pedagogical philosopher Loris Malaguzzi, who stated that “education is politics”, meaning that education cannot be neutral or separated from its social and cultural context. This perspective implies that every educational decision has a political impact, as it influences society and promotes the rights and opportunities of children. Malaguzzi believed that involving the community and fostering democratic dialogue is essential to making the school a place of active participation. Children’s rights include respecting their dignity, autonomy, and voice. The right to express individuality should not be confused with individualism. Rights belong to everyone and are also about taking responsibility for one another and valuing diverse perspectives within a democratic society.
