The Mike Styles Experience

Michael Styles

I'm here to share my thoughts and sometimes my experiences about the things that happen in our society and the people who live in it. Some of it is good, but most of it is bad. I'm trying to understand why some people do the things that they do and what drives them to do it.

When Loving Your Child Goes Too Far

Just when you think you’ve seen and heard it all, another story comes along that makes you question how far people are willing to go for family. In this episode, I’m talking about the Mount Vernon shooting case involving a 20-year-old man accused of being involved in a drive-by shooting—and the allegations that his own mother acted as a getaway driver. His father is also accused of being involved and is currently on the run. What really stands out to me isn't just the alleged crime itself. It's the fact that we're talking about parents who, according to the allegations, became involved in their adult son's criminal activity. As a parent, I understand loving your children and wanting to protect them. But there's a line that has to be drawn. You can love your child without helping them commit a crime. You can support your child without allowing their choices to destroy your life. At 20 years old, he's an adult. If he chooses that lifestyle despite his parents' guidance, there comes a point where you have to step back and let him face the consequences of his own decisions. Sometimes loving your child means standing beside them. And sometimes it means standing back and saying, "I'm not going down this road with you." This is my take on a story involving family, accountability, bad decisions, and the consequences that can follow when those lines get crossed. These are my personal thoughts and commentary based on publicly reported allegations.
