Prince: Track by Track Darren Husted

Very thorough and enjoyable podcast. You’ve certainly done your research, but I find your take on a lot of things very interesting. As a British guy, you kind of miss a lot of subtext with Prince. From time to time Prince used slang, and expressions and figures of speech that were distinctly African-American. Your take on some of his lyrics and subject matter seems a little off base here and there. Guess I can’t expect you to “get” everything. Otherwise, you give very good analysis. I did notice that You mispronounce Mico Weaver’s name. It’s pronounced Mee-ko, not My-ko. Lol

These examinations Prince and his marionette “interchangeable protégés” seems to dismiss his groundbreaking moves. It also makes lyrics with situational irony (and easily understood situations of love trumping money) into a straight up joke. Whether this is cultural disconnect or straight up disrespect, I’m not sure. Either way, it comes off as dismissive and disrespectful. The treatment and comments of Sheila E, (especially for Glamorous Life) always shown with “a couple of snares and a cowbell” illustrates the shallow body of research done for this pod. Common knowledge-Sheila E was a percussionist first. She struggled with the idea of being seen as a sexy gimmick solo act vs being that percussionist. I don’t expect a unrealistic reverence for all things Prince, but he does deserve a fair evaluation. This isn’t it. I’d also like to know if the host lived during the 80s. I’m saying NO. 🙄

Are you even Prince fans?? Laughing and making fun of the song and video?? First of all, the Holy River it a metaphor for Mayte being a virgin and the Holy River is what happens when a women has sex for the first time. I guess you two wouldn’t know about that 🙄
