    Runners Who Read Podcast EP 12: Range by David Epstein

    David Epstein is a highly awarded journalist, New York Times bestselling author, and fellow runner among numerous other things. Like many of the characters in his book Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Highly Specialized World, which we read over the last 7 weeks, he has benefitted from a winding career path. Having master’s degrees in both environmental science and journalism, David might be the only person to have co-authored a paper in the journal of Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine research while employed as a writer at Sports Illustrated. From a story about the only living Olympian to survive a concentration camp to one detailing the DEA’s fraught pursuit of Chapo Guzman’s rivals, he has had covered many topics. In addition to Range, his previous book, The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance was a New York Times bestseller as well. As a collegiate athlete at Columbia University he was a 2-time school record holder and twice NCAA All-East in the 800m. He also has enjoyed volunteering with the Pat Tillman Foundation and Classroom Champions.   In this conversation we discuss topics from his bestselling book, Range and how they apply to today's world.     Amanda Brooks is an entrepreneur, inspiring author, and fellow runner. In 2007, she created the website RunToTheFinish.com to connect with fellow runners. It has since blossomed into a space where people can find coaching, gear reviews, and highly researched articles on a variety of running-related topics. As the founder of the popular blog "Run to the Finish," and through her Instagram page of the same name, she has cultivated a vibrant online community of runners who share their stories, support one another, and find inspiration in the shared love of running.     Runners Who Read EP 10: Becoming a Sustainable Runner by Tina Muir and Zoë Rom

    Tina Muir is a former elite marathoner who is now the Founder and CEO of Running For Real, host of an award-winning podcast of the same name, author of multiple books, and environmental activist. As an elite athlete, she ran a personal best of 2:36 in the marathon and represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 2016 World Half Marathon Championships where she placed 49th. After retiring from pro running, she started Running For Real, a business designed to use running as a vehicle for social change and encourage people to be vulnerable and courageous about the things that matter. The accompanying Running For Real Podcast, which was voted best fitness podcast at the sports podcast awards in 2021, creates space to have conversations about running, social justice, and the climate emergency. Alongside her work with Running For Real, she is also implementing a sustainability plan for the 2025 World Road Running Championships in San Diego and has worked with other major road race organizers and even the United Nations on campaigns related to climate change and humanitarian affairs.   In this conversation from December 2023, Olivia sits down with Tina to discuss the many ways that individual runners and running event organizations can make meaningful changes to help preserve the environment.     Runners Who Read EP 9: The Longest Race by Kara Goucher

    For the 9th installment of the Runners Who Read Podcast, Olivia sits down with Kara Goucher, the best-selling author of The Longest Race: Inside the Secret World of Abuse, Doping, and Deception on Nike's Elite Running Team. In addition to being an author, she is also a 2x Olympian, analyst for NBC, and co-host on multiple podcasts. During her collegiate running career at the University of Colorado Boulder, she was a 3xNCAA Champion. She then went on in her professional career to win a silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in the 10,000m, record podium finishes in the Boston and New York Marathons, and compete in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Off the track, she cohosts the hit running commentary podcast Nobody Asked Us with Des & Kara, as well as the Clean Sport Collective podcast, promoting fair play in sports. She has also established herself as a top running analyst for NBC, regularly providing on-air commentary at many of the biggest events throughout the track and field season.   In this conversation from June, 2023 between two seasoned veterans of the professional track and field world, we discuss all things elite athletics and no topic is off limits.     Runners Who Read EP 8: Good for a Girl by Lauren Fleshman

    For the 8th installment of the Runners Who Read Podcast, Olivia sat down with Lauren Fleshman, the NY Times bestselling author of Good for a Girl. In addition to being an author, Lauren is an entrepreneur and one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time. She won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national titles as a professional going on to finish as high as 7th in the 5k at the 2011 World Championships in South Korea. As a writer, her work has appeared in The New York Times and Runner’s World and her recent memoir, Good For A Girl: A Woman Running in a Man’s World, debuted at 10th on the New York Times bestseller list in the hardcover non-fiction category. She is also a co-founder of Picky Bars, a company that sells performance bars made with real food ingredients, and co-creator of Believe I Am, a company that champions the physical, mental, social, and emotional benefits of running by connecting athletes with sports psychology resources and conducting research on pregnancy for elite athletes.   In this live recorded book club discussion from April 2023, we talk about the importance of nutrition and recovery in avoiding Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (also known as RED-S), the differences between the development curve of boys and girls' sports performance upon reaching puberty, and the importance of the role of coaches in the development and success of women in sports through the lens of Lauren's own upbringing in sports.
