Helloooo There! (#6)

Welcome to Fiction Forward, episode 6. We probably should have started a new "season," since it's been one square eternity since we recorded, but hey! Welcome back! In this episode Jackie and Kelly talk a whole bunch about book publishing in general, plus the authors and books they'll be featuring on upcoming episodes! Enjoy this short episode, and look forward to author Claire Kann in our next one!

A Non-Problematic YA Fantasy? (#5)

Today Jackie and Kelly talk about Before She Ignites, a YA fantasy by Jodi Meadows. While all of the characters are POC, Meadows is actually white. This could go terribly, terribly wrong. Or… maybe not? It’s also worth noting that Before She Ignites may be the first, or one of the first, books from a major publishing house to include a POC model on the cover! Often POC-based covers are avoided in favor of vague designs or landscapes (take, for example, Forest of a Thousand Lanterns — even though the cover is still beautiful). Is this book, centered around a group of islands populated by POC characters, going to show its problematic side? Or will it be decidedly tame? Find out in this week’s episode of Fiction Forward! Remember to keep in touch! You can email us at fictionforward@fictionistmag.com or tweet us @fiction_forward! –Jackie and Kelly

Baz and Simon Together 4eva (#4)

In which Jackie and Kelly talk about the popular YA standalone "Carry On" by Rainbow Rowell. It's sort of Harry Potter, but not, and it has some lovely LGBT representation. Let's dig in. Don't forget to join in by tweeting us @fiction_forward or emailing at fictionforward@fictionistmag.com! We love puppies and also thoughtful discourse. Stay Forward! Is that lame? Sorry.

The Black [?] Witch (#3)

After episode two's interview with journalist Kat Rosenfield, we decided to read a book in the center of a huge controversy -- 'The Black Witch' -- and form our own opinions. Join Jackie, Kelly and special guest Daphnee as they laugh, yell and discuss 'The Black Witch.' This episode brought to you by an inability to pronounce fantasy characters' names. Don't forget to check us out on Twitter (@fiction_forward) or email us (fictionforward@fictionistmag.com)!
