    This week in our yearly update message, Jake reminded us that the church is not a building, staff, or Sunday service, but a people called to actively participate in God’s work of making and growing disciples. He highlighted the importance of engagement over passive attendance, generosity rooted in stewardship, and a shared commitment to both local and global mission. While structure helps support ministry, true spiritual life happens as each person chooses to participate in relationships, service, giving, and discipleship. The call is clear: don’t just attend church — be the church.

    Living on Purpose - Pt. 2: With One Accord

    Living on purpose was never meant to be done alone. In Acts 1, Jesus called His followers to stay together and devote themselves to prayer while waiting for the promise of the Father. Their unity, with one accord, positioned them to receive power, direction, and boldness from the Holy Spirit. This kind of unity required intentional, Christ-centered relationships marked by humility, patience, forgiveness, and love. Prayer was central, as they continually sought God together through both devotion and supplication. As they remained united in relationship, prayer, and purpose, God empowered them to move forward and fulfill their calling as His witnesses.

    Living on Purpose - Pt. 1: Patient in Prayer

    This week, Jake began a new mini-series, Living on Purpose, and today we discussed how before Jesus sent His followers into action, He commanded them to wait. After the resurrection, Jesus clarified their purpose: to be witnesses to all nations, but instead of giving a strategy, He promised power through the Holy Spirit and instructed them to stay, tarry, and abide in Jerusalem. This waiting was not passive; it was a posture of sitting, remaining, and abiding in God through devoted prayer. The disciples obeyed by gathering in unity and committing themselves to prayer and supplication, modeling how God’s direction, power, and peace come not from rushing into purpose but from patiently abiding with Him. Living on purpose, personally and as a church, begins with learning the posture of Jesus; sitting and abiding in prayer while waiting for God’s lead.

    Following the birth of Jesus, we see a beautiful picture of what it looks like to be dedicated to God. Through the lives of Mary, Joseph, Simeon, and Anna, we see what faithful and sacrificial worship of God produces in our lives. May we experience a growing love for God, and find our hope refreshed and renewed as we dedicate ourselves to Jesus.

    In Luke chapter 1 we have the story of the angelic visitor Gabriel, delivering the news of the coming births of both John the Baptist and Jesus. This good news brings with it some very real challenges. Can Zechariah and Elizabeth hold on to hope after years of disappointment? Can Mary receive both the blessing and the incredible sacrifice that comes with the gift of being the mother of the Messiah? As we remember the good news of Jesus this season, may we be able to find fresh hope as we walk in the blessings of God, even in the midst of the great sacrifices that often accompany them.

    The Story - Pt. 1: We beheld His Glory

    This week, Jake explains that the Christmas story is really the story of God’s redemption that began long before Bethlehem. John teaches that Jesus, the Word, has always existed and is both fully God and the Creator of all things. He is the source of life, and His light continues to shine in the darkness. John the Baptist appears as the God-sent messenger whose purpose was to prepare people for the coming of Jesus, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy. Even though Jesus entered the world He made and came to His own people, many still did not receive Him. Yet those who do believe in Him are given the privilege of becoming children of God, born not through human effort but through the Spirit. In the end, the Word became flesh and lived among us, allowing us to see His glory, full of grace and truth, which is the heart of the true Christmas story.

    As we conclude Mark’s Gospel today, may we respond to Jesus' call to live with Purpose, walk in Power, and share the Gospel by the grace of His Presence with us. The call to bring the Good News wasn’t specific to only the original disciples, but is the purpose of all those who believe. May we learn to rely upon the power of God and be sustained by His presence as we go into all the world.
