Florida Beer Podcast - Mocama Brewing Pt. 2

This is Part 2 of our conversation at Mocama Brewing in Fernandina Beach, just north of Jacksonville. If you haven't listened to Part 1, make sure to listen to Episode 210. On this episode is continuing our conversation with Head Brewer Justin Southwell, Brewer and Production Manager Nicholas Johnson, Assistant Brewer Justin Conway, Coffee Shop Manager Elliott Terral. The conversation starts with the changing face of what new craft breweries look like vs. what new craft breweries looked like a decade ago, the first beer you should always try when visiting a new brewery, and the surprising location in Georgia that always wants Mocama beer. Florida Beer Podcast - Mocama Brewing Pt. 1

Nestled in on Florida's Atlantic side, just north of Jacksonville, is the small island community of Fernandina Beach. Here, in an old car dealership and tile showroom, sits Mocama Brewing. Mocama is the word for ocean in the ancient Timacua dialect that was spoken by pre-Colombian civilizations in the area. The namesake brewery opened near the end of 2020, opened by five people that had cut their teeth in the craft beer industry in locations like Creature Comforts. It is currently owned and operated by husband and wife team Kim and Andrew Batey and operates a full service kitchen, coffee shop open at 7:30 am daily, and (of course) the production brewery and tap room. In charge of much of that is Head Brewer Justin Southwell, Nicholas Johnson, Brewer and Production Manager, Assistant Brewer Justin Conway, plus the voice you'll hear for a lot of this episode, Coffee Shop Manager Elliott Terral. We start with a discussion of the coffee side of things, the rise of that segment of the third space, and Fernandina Beach's place in Florida craft beer (even after I horribly butcher the pronunciation). Also, listen as we chat about the expected morning crowd of coffee drinkers as they transition to beer drinkers in the afternoons, and starting Mocama's new liquor program. Florida Beer Podcast - Coral Reefer CannaBrew

It is no secret that CBD infused beverages are becoming the next hot item in craft drinks. The regulation surrounding these, however, tends to still be a work in progress. Also currently undergoing refinement is how these beverages are marketed and sold to the general public. But, if you're going to have a beverage that promotes the idea of a fun sunny day, who better to pair with it then the Legacy of Florida favorite Jimmy Buffett? That was all the idea behind Coral Reefer, a new non-alcoholic CBD infused beverage. Produced with the inspiration of everyone's favorite parrot head, these beverages come in a variety of flavors and THC strengths. We spoke to the co-founders behind Coral Reefer, Joe Snyder and Peter Hanley, about the legacy of Jimmy buffett, creating a beverage with the marketplace and the Margaritaville inspiration in mind, and the future of these beverages in Florida and the United states. Plus, listeners will have access to a special discount code to order Coral Reefer shipped directly to you! Florida Beer Podcast - Tidal Brewing, Spring Hill

It is impossible to ignore what Tidal Brewing in Spring Hill used to be in a former life. The gas station pumps have long since been removed but the overhang remains, as well as the separate car wash that has been turned into a brewhouse. And an award-winning brewhosue, no less. That work was done by owners Dave and Maxine Peitzman, both former teachers in Hernando County turned brewmaster and tap room manager for one of the area's hottest breweries. I sat down with Dave and Maxine to discuss beer in the region, how Tidal reflected their own backgrounds in education, and the joys of converting a car wash to a brewhouse. Florida Beer Podcast - Green Turtle Brewery and Public House, St. Petersburg

There is nothing more cozy, warm, and inviting than a British pub. With deep colors, understated pub signs, and tons of Premier League scarves covering every potential space, the new Green Turtle Brewery and Public House on Central in St. Pete does everything right to appease our friends from across the pond.  Green Turtle is owned by its brewer Todd Bearden. His brewing path began in St. Louis while in school for theatre, so we spoke to him about that experience, finding the right location for Green Turtle, and the depth of a good cask ale program. Florida Beer Podcast - Retro Chill at 3 Daughters Brewing

The RTD, or Ready To Drink craft cocktail, has taken the craft beverage world by storm recently. These ready mixed cocktails are a perfect compliment to any occasion and give consumers that aren't necessarily interested in beer a different avenue to try.  One brewery in Florida, our friends at St Pete's 3 Daughters Brewing, has been embracing the RTD phenomenon for years, putting substantial thought behind their line of Retro Chill RTD beverages.  These inspired cocktails, of which there are now four, are available statewide in a variety of locations. We sat down with Corey Auger, Director of Channel Sales and Brand Development to discuss the RTD phenomenon, the amazing flavors of Retro Chill, and 3 Daughters commitment to always exploring the latest and greatest for their customers. Florida Beer Podcast - Ulele, Part 1

In 1903, a water pumping station was opened along the banks of the Hillsborough River in Tampa to supply fresh water to the growing Ybor City and residents beyond. After falling into disrepair for many years, it was purchased and heavily renovated by the 1905 Family of Restaurants to become Ulele, a destination offering pre-Columbian Florida-inspired cuisine and a rotation of local-inspired beers.  In that time, Ulele has grown into a crown jewel and beloved destination along Tampa's much-visited Riverwalk. The beers, which you can enjoy along the 2.6-mile riverwalk, are the brainchild of Ulele's brewmaster Tim Shackton, who joined the Ulele team a full 2 years before the opening of the restaurant.  Making sure Ulele is an important part of the fabric of Tampa's vibrant culture is Jeff Houck, VP of Marketing of the 1905 Family of Restaurants (best known for Columbia Restaurant, Florida's oldest restaurant). Jeff is a guru when it comes to all things Tampa History, even co-authoring a fantastic book about the history of the Cuban sandwich.  I spoke to Tim and Jeff about Columbia's beer-related history, their location along the Hillsborough River and Tampa's Riverwalk, and the surprising beer style Ulele did not open with.
