From Dalai Lama Bodyguard to Follower of Jesus (Dawa Singye's Story)

What happens when a man serving in the inner circle of the Dalai Lama encounters the truth of Jesus Christ? In this episode of SWAT Radio, Doug McCary and Brad Sykes are joined by Dawa Singye, founder of the Himalayan Good News Network. Born to Tibetan refugee parents in India, Dawa was handpicked as a young man to join the elite military detail protecting the Dalai Lama. For eight years, he traveled the world serving one of the most respected religious figures on earth. Yet, despite his position, status, and lifestyle, Dawa had no personal conviction or spiritual peace—until an unlikely friendship with a Christian roommate challenged everything he believed. Dawa shares his incredible journey from street fighting, gambling, and military security to surrendering his life to Christ, facing rejection from his family, and trusting God to provide when he stepped into ministry with nothing to his name. Key Topics in This Episode: Life in the Dalai Lama's Detail: Growing up as a Tibetan Buddhist in India and entering elite military service. The Power of a Quiet Testimony: How Dawa's roommate lived out his faith without a Bible and sparked Dawa's curiosity about Jesus. Counting the Cost: Resigning from the military and facing rejection from his family to follow Christ. Miraculous Provision: How God provided a way into Bible college when Dawa had no money and only the clothes on his back. A Mother's Care: How God placed a local Christian woman in Dawa's life to encourage him during his first Christmas away from home. What Is Your "One Thing"? (Philippians 3:1–14)

What is the single priority driving your decisions, your energy, and your daily life? In this episode of SWAT Radio, hosts Doug McCary, David Gray, and Craig Henderson unpack Philippians 3:1–14. The Apostle Paul had everything our culture values—status, credentials, education, and influence—yet when confronted with Christ, he realized none of it compared to knowing Jesus. Together, the team discusses what it looks like to let go of religious performance, evaluate our true priorities, and align our lives around the "one thing" that actually lasts. Key Topics in This Episode: The Trap of "Jesus + Performance": Why adding good works to the Gospel undermines true grace. Paul's Spiritual Resume: Understanding why Paul called his greatest earthly achievements rubbish compared to Christ. Knowing About God vs. Knowing Him: Moving beyond head knowledge into an active, abiding relationship with Jesus. Forgetting What Lies Behind: How to stop living in past failures, past victories, or lingering regrets. Leaving It All on the Field: What it means for Christian men to finish well and press on toward the upward call of God. Key Scripture: "Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." — Philippians 3:13–14 (ESV) Connect with SWAT Radio: Website: https://www.swatradio.com Join a Group: Want to connect with a local SWAT Bible study or find a band of brothers in your area? Choosing to Serve over Self-Promotion

The world tells us that if you want to find satisfaction, you need to promote yourself, protect your own interests, and seek comfort above all else. Yet, in Philippians 2:5-18, the Apostle Paul directly challenges this self-centric mindset by pointing to Jesus as the ultimate counter-cultural model. Jesus possessed all the rights of divinity but willingly laid them aside, humbling Himself to the point of a brutal death on a cross for others. True humility is not just a standard of behavior; it is a foundational shift in mindset that must precede how we behave in our homes, relationships, and workplaces. Our human nature naturally fights against this, looking for personal comfort or validation, but spiritual maturity requires an intentional surrender to God's will. Choosing to view ourselves as servants in a culture obsessed with self-advancement is difficult, but it is precisely how we reflect Christ’s light in a fractured world. Living a life modeled after Christ's humility is not passive; it requires deliberate, spiritual effort to resist our default selfishness. There is a profound difference between fleeting happiness, which depends entirely on our external circumstances, and deep Christian joy, which persists even in the midst of trials and suffering. While the culture sells dissatisfaction to encourage continuous consumption and self-care, God uses uncomfortable situations to refine our character and realign our values. To cultivate this inner resilience, we need active engagement in spiritual disciplines like prayer and meditation on scripture, rather than simply expecting spiritual growth to happen automatically. By shifting our daily goal from seeking self-satisfaction to pursuing the glory of God, we find the peace that the world cannot offer and transform how we interact with those around us.
