She is based at Monash University's ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society.// Antipoverty Centre spokesperson Kristin O'Connell joined us to unpack the continued imposition of compulsory income management programs in Australia, despite two decades of widespread opposition since it was first introduced as part of the Northern Territory Intervention. The Community Affairs References Committee is currently undertaking a review into the Social Security (Administration) Legislation Amendment (Income Management and Enhanced Income Management) Instrument 2026, a legislative instrument introduced by Minister for Social Services Tanya Plibersek in June this year, which removes legislative deadlines for income management programs disproportionately targeting First Nations Peoples. Get your tickets here.// In August we were joined by Bendigo renter and housing advocate, Kristie Hoskins, to talk to us about a petition she launched in the Victorian Parliament to ban continuous video surveillance throughout routine rental inspections. This week, we were fortunate to have Kristie on the show again to learn more about a federal petition she put forward to make it easier for renters to obtain their first home loan, and hear about a recent win she had in her campaign.// We were joined by Jorgen Doyle, an activist who was involved in blockading the access road to the Pine Gap military intelligence facility on October 9, 2025, in protest of Australia's signals intelligence complicity in Israel's genocide in Gaza, whose case in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court ultimately concluded with the judge deciding not to record a conviction. We were also joined by criminal defence lawyer Nicholas Hanna, who represented the defendants - Jorgen Doyle and Yul Scarf - in this case. We heard about evidence presented to the court that confirmed Israel’s conduct in Gaza constitutes a genocide, and that Pine Gap is sending intelligence to the Israeli military enabling this genocide.//

The report they produced successfully resulted in an official United Nations communication with the Australian Government regarding concerns about the human rights impacts of the public housing tower redevelopment plan. Dr Bekker and students at the Castan Centre worked together to create the report.// Earlier this week, Environment Centre Northern Territory campaigner Sarah Wilson joined 3CRs Tuesday breakfast to unpack the logistics of fracking and its environmental impacts. Today we kept the spotlight on fracking by speaking with fellow ECNT campaigner Dan Broun about the economic myths and legends that underpin NT fracking plans and the link with the Country Liberal Party’s dubious AI data centre scheme. The piece provides a deep-dive into the question, 'What is AI?'// Multi-award winning gender equality advocate, writer and facilitator Gina Martin joined us for a critical conversation about the privacy and gendered implications of a rise in wearable surveillance technology, including via Kmart’s new Anko-brand camera glasses. Gina recently launched a petition demanding that Kmart group managing director Aleksandra Spaseska take immediate action to remove these glasses from store shelves. The petition has now reached over 54,000 signatures, signalling a strong public desire to get rid of the glasses for good due to privacy concerns, after they sold out almost immediately upon launching last month.// Ben McLeod, Senior Advisor at the Climate Council, joined us to unpack the need to shield households from data centre bills and pollution. The data centre boom has raised concerns about the impact of these centres on households sharing the same local energy grid, suggesting the need for centres to be powered by renewable energy so that they do not lead to an increase in local energy bills.// As part of our AI Breakfast Special this week, we spoke with Associate Professor of Social Work at ACU, Jessica Russ-Smith, a sovereign Wiradyuri Wambuul woman, from the Smith and McGuinness Wiradyuri matriarchy. Her work focuses on the embodiment of First Nations sovereignty and critical anti-colonial practice. Jess co-authored the groundbreaking 2024 book "The AI (R)evolution: Valuing Country, Culture and Community in a World of Algorithms", which challenges dominant narratives about artificial intelligence by centring First Nations sovereignty. Today, Jess discussed the current harms of the AI transformation on Country, climate and social justice, the issue of data sovereignty, and ways in which we can reconceptualise AI using First Nations Peoples' ways of knowing and being with technology. Invasive recording in routine rental inspections, NSW Police drop charges against Rising Tide People's Blockade, healthcare workers solidarity with Palestine in AHPRA protest, updates on the Save Preston Market campaign

Concerned about the growing use of camera technology by some real estate agents and the applicability of rental records for home loans, she's launched petitions in both the Victorian and Federal parliaments calling for stronger protections for renters. We discussed the increasing use of cameras during rental inspections, what rights tenants currently have, and the changes Kristie is pushing for through her petitions. To follow Kristie’s work visit her Facebook page, and find her petition to protect renters against invasive recording throughout rental inspections here.// Dr Josh Pallas, Legal Director at Climate Defenders Australia, joined us to discuss NSW Police's recent move to drop all remaining charges against people arrested at Rising Tide's 2024 People's Blockade action, where hundreds of people entered Newcastle Harbour to protest the export of coal out of the world's largest coal port. Climate Defenders Australia, a legal service dedicated to the rights of frontline environmental and climate defenders, represented over 100 People's Blockade arrestees, and had repeatedly petitioned for the withdrawal of their anti-protest charges after NSW Police's failure to prosecute a set of test cases.// We heard from a speech made by Journalist, Wendy Bacon, at a Sydney rally held by healthcare workers in solidarity with Palestine at the NSW Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency HQ on 26 July 2026. In the speech, Wendy speaks about never forgetting to foreground Palestine even though the fall out for civil liberties can be very confronting, before speaking about the actions of Dr Peter McDonald, an eminent cardiologist who was suspended because of alleged anti-semitism remarks he made about Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad. Vivien Langford of 3CR's Climate Action Show recorded the piece and also provides a brief introduction. You can catch the Climate Action Show on Mondays 5-6pm.//Zheng Chin is a community organiser and member of the Save Preston Market action group who has written a PhD in urban planning about the successful campaign to save Preston Market from demolition. Kim Chow-Evans is a creative arts therapist and filmmaker with a background in social justice and community work. She is currently filming a documentary on the campaign to save Preston Market, called The People's Market. We were joined by both Zheng and Kim to speak about the latest developments in the campaign to save Preston Market, including what the recent heritage protections mean for the market's future, whether it remains under threat, the experience documenting the campaign, and the recent community push to rename Reservoir Library after Councillor Gaetano Greco, an integral figure in the Save Preston Market campaign’s success who passed in 2025. This incredible series tells the story of the public housing towers - the flats - focusing on the vitality and resistance of the community in the face of racialised policing and structural violence. The People's Record will be broadcasting daily on 3CR 855AM from the 8th of August.// Nic Seton, CEO of Parents for Climate, spoke with us about the organisation’s successful push to close the Climate Active program, the adequacy of voluntary climate claims, and new mandatory climate-related financial disclosure requirements for Australian companies. Parents for Climate are a national parent advocacy organisation working to empower communities to make the climate safer for children. They have campaigned for over three years to abolish the Climate Active program, including through a landmark court case brought against EnergyAustralia, community advocacy work, and sustained investigation into greenwashing by energy companies. Nic Seton is a former stay-at-home dad, and has over 12 years’ experience working across international environmental organisations.// Bill McKenzie, Deputy Chair of the 44FU Layfield Court Residents Committee, shared updates from yesterday's action, where public housing residents from over-55s flats from at least four estates across Melbourne took their petition to resist the demolition of their homes to the office of Housing Minister Nick Staikos. Bill was a member of a small delegation of representatives who entered 1 Spring Street to bring the residents’ petition to Staikos, who chose not to meet directly with residents despite being in the building at the time of the action. The Layfield Court Resident's Committee represents residents at 150 Victoria Avenue, Albert Park, an older persons' high-rise where Bill has lived for nearly 20 years.//
