    Let's Talk About Breast Cancer OUT LOUD w/ Dr. Jessica Torrente, MD

    In 2026, there will be about 229,900 new cancer diagnoses and 54,200 cancer deaths among Hispanic/ Latino people in the continental United States and Hawaii. Cancer was the leading cause of death among Hispanic/Latino people in 2024. Cancer disparities in Hispanic people partly reflect less access to healthcare; 25% of Hispanic people ages 18-64 years are uninsured, three times the percentage of White people (8%). October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and on this special episode of Latinos Out Loud Rachel La Loca sits down with Dr. Jessica Torrente, a Spanish-speaking radiologist at Maimonides Health in Brooklyn (the hospital where Rachel was born!) for an honest and informative conversation about self diagnosis, the fear of breast cancer in a family where it runs rampant, life after breast cancer treatment, and much more. Dr. Torrente explains why ongoing monitoring is essential, especially for Latina women, who often face barriers to early detection and preventative care. Together, they discuss the importance of staying connected to healthcare providers, understanding your long-term health needs, and advocating for yourself every step of the way.
