    297: Phil's Summer Review

Get out your coats as that’s a wrap – of the 2026 Summer. Which means the big blockbuster season, lasting seemingly for ever, is over for another year.  However, we couldn’t let this moment pass without having our say on some of the key movies of the hot months.  For this discussion we have unleashed Graham, Jeff and Phil to do the honours.  Phil of course watches just about everything with the other two rather in his wake.  We tried to make sure that for the main four films included in this review, all three lads have cast their critical gaze over them. Sadly Graham had a note from his mom excusing him from the slightly frightening one. Like last year we let Phil pick the films that made this a stand out summer for him.  Remarkably, Jeff and Phil hardly disagree on this show! So what are the four films: Obsession – The low budget hit that Graham ran away from The Odyssey – Christopher Nolan is back with another winner.  A film Jeff and Graham got to see in a premium cinema, especially designed for screening this epic (oh and Graham has a tale to tell of his toilet encounter after the movie) Spider-Man: Brand New Day – Of course Phil had to pick a Marvel movie.  Don’t worry, Jeff did try to fly the flag for DC’s Summer offering The End Of Oak Street – No Jurassic World this year, but there are dinosaurs! And as an added bonus, the three talk about the movies they are looking forward to seeing in the remaining months of 2026. Was it a great Summer? Absolutely and the team discuss why. As always please tell us what you think. For now, we are getting our notebooks out for the Fall (Autumn) season.  Watch out for us scribbling At The Flicks. Bye for now.

    296: Streaming Futures Part II

In episode 294 Declan, Graham and Jeff looked at what the streaming landscape could look like in the near future given all the recent amalgamations, such as Paramount and HBO.  At the end of that show, Declan posed the question “what about YouTube”? The answer is this latest show.  We brought that same team back together to look at the very successful phenomenon that is YouTube to examine its success, and what does it offer that other, more conventional streaming platforms do not. With the excellent timing you would expect from At The Flicks, our discussion became very topical. 2 films created by people who essentially refined their craft on YouTube, were proving to be big hitters in this Summer’s movie season.  Obsession comes from writer / director Curry Barker (26 years old) and has become the most financially successful film ever to be made for less than one million dollars.  Then there is Backrooms, directed by Kane Parsons (20 when he made the film), another massive hit.  We talk about both and how their YouTube channels contributed to their respective successes. Going beyond the YouTube content creators, we also discuss how people of all ages use the platform.  From the How To videos to the finding of “lost” 70’s movies (have a guess who that person is).  All of this is the fun aspect.  There is the darker algorithm side, with its potential for addiction. Also covered here.  Finally, we look at the possible alternatives to YouTube which are either now available or still in development. Not our usual type of show, however it’s one we think you will find interesting.  Declan will return later in the year with a new Carry On Streaming in the normal format.  Until then see you At The Flicks.
