Rockwood Lodge, Sports Cards & Brewers Playoff Predictions

What if one of the most unusual chapters in Green Bay Packers history ended with a mysterious fire, $75,000 in insurance money and Curly Lambeau leaving the organization? In this episode of The Man Cave Podcast, Dan Kasper launches Man Cave University — Throwing It Back Thursday, a new recurring feature exploring lesser-known stories from sports history. The first stop is Rockwood Lodge, the Packers' unique training facility in the late 1940s. Dan tells the story of Curly Lambeau's vision for a self-contained Packers headquarters where players and their families could live, eat, practice and spend the football season together. But Rockwood Lodge came with plenty of problems. The practice field was built over limestone and became notorious among players, the Packers were struggling financially and on the field, and tensions were growing between Lambeau and members of the organization's board. Then, on January 24, 1950, Rockwood Lodge burned to the ground. The Packers received $75,000 from the insurance policy, and just days later Lambeau resigned after 31 years with the franchise. Those circumstances have fueled an enduring question: Was the fire really an accident, or was Rockwood Lodge deliberately burned? Dan looks at what is known about the fire, the insurance money and the conspiracy theory surrounding it, while also explaining why there is no definitive evidence that the Packers or anyone connected to the organization intentionally set the fire. Then it's time for sports cards. Dan is joined by Ty from Slab Factory to break down Bowman Football, including NFL and NIL players, First Bowman cards, rookies, autographs, short prints, Anime cards, Etched in Glass, Spotlights, Garbage Pail Kids and more. They also answer listener questions about Ricky Money's cards, grading Jacob Misiorowski cards, the potential value of a Ty Simpson All Kings card and whether collectors should hold onto raw Shohei Ohtani rookies. Dan and Ty also discuss some of the biggest recent sports-card sales, including Pete Crow-Armstrong's rookie debut patch selling for nearly $1.1 million, the difference between the NBA and baseball card markets, the impact of player personality on card values, Topps Now and upcoming NBA releases. Finally, with the MLB postseason underway, Ty gives his Brewers playoff predictions and the guys discuss what a huge postseason from Jacob Misiorowski could do for his card market. Plus, a quick Packers update on Green Bay signing Kevin Zeitler. Packers history, sports cards, collecting, baseball and Brewers playoff talk — all in one episode of The Man Cave Podcast. Pat Murphy, Vince Lombardi, College Mascots & The Sports Card Hobby

This is a packed episode of The Man Cave Podcast covering everything from Brewers baseball and legendary coaches to college mascots and the sports card hobby. Dan kicks things off with a conversation about Brewers manager Pat Murphy and whether some of his leadership style reminds Dan of Vince Lombardi. They aren't comparing the two coaches' careers or accomplishments, but instead look at how both have been known for demanding a lot from their players while also knowing when and how to build them back up. He discusses Murphy's handling of players like Cooper Pratt and Robert Gasser, the culture he's created in Milwaukee, and what his legacy could eventually become. Then it's college mascot time. Dan and Brandon debate their favorite mascots, including Bucky Badger, the Oregon Duck, Big Red, the Stanford Tree, WuShock and some of the more unusual characters in college sports. They also revisit Mike Leach's entertaining hypothetical about what would happen if college mascots had to fight. Dan also catches up with Ty from Slab Factory for a deep dive into the sports card hobby. They talk about PSA's grading backlog and new service levels, what's happening with Beckett and other grading companies, the changing market for players like Tim Duncan and Brett Favre, new football card releases, and whether a potential MLB lockout could impact baseball card values. Ty also shares some of his favorite Brewers cards, including Jackson Chourio, Prince Fielder and some unique one-of-one cards, plus there's a special Brewers card giveaway for listeners. And there's a little preview of a future Man Cave conversation about the things we were told as kids that we'd eventually "understand when we got older." No scripts. No forced takes. Just Man Cave talk. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

    I Love Football...and I Hate Football

Week One of the NFL season is officially in the books, and Dan Kasper has plenty to say about it. On this episode of The Man Cave Podcast, Dan reveals his first NFL Top 10 Power Rankings of the season, including where the Packers' rivals land and why the Baltimore Ravens are sitting at No. 1. He also takes a closer look at Derrick Henry's incredible career and makes the case that the future Hall of Famer is still underrated. Then it's time for some October baseball talk. Dan explains why he believes the Milwaukee Brewers' recent offensive surge could change the narrative heading into the postseason—and why, if they can carry that momentum into October, he believes the Brewers have a legitimate shot at the World Series. But the most personal part of the episode comes at the end, as Dan opens up about the emotional side of being a football fan. After seeing the negativity and frustration surrounding the Packers following Week One, Dan talks about how fan reactions can sometimes take the fun out of sports—and why it's okay to be frustrated without letting a loss ruin your week, your relationships, or your life. It's a conversation about sports, passion, perspective, and remembering why we love the games in the first place. In this episode:• Dan's NFL Top 10 Power Rankings after Week One• Why Baltimore is No. 1• Derrick Henry's historic career and why he's a "unicorn"• The Brewers' September offensive surge• Why Dan believes Milwaukee can make a World Series run• The emotional side of being a Packers fan• Why sports debates don't have to turn into arguments• A reminder to keep the passion—but take a deep breath Get in the Man Cave and join the conversation!
