Genocide in Libya under Italian Rule. A Conversation with Ali Abdullatif Ahmida

Today's episode explores one of the least discussed chapters in the history of twentieth-century colonialism: the genocide carried out by Fascist Italy in eastern Libya between 1929 and 1934. In Genocide in Libya: Shar, a Hidden Colonial History, Ali Abdullatif Ahmida examines Italy's campaign to crush anti-colonial resistance in Cyrenaica, during which tens of thousands of Libyans died through forced displacement, executions, starvation, and imprisonment in concentration camps. But this is more than a history of colonial violence. Ahmida asks why a genocide of this scale has remained largely absent from public memory. He explores how the destruction of evidence, the enduring myth of "moderate" Italian Fascism, and the marginalization of Libyan voices helped obscure one of the twentieth century's major colonial crimes. You can read a review of Ahmida's book in Arabic here: https://al-salon.com/article/lshr-lthy-l-yghtfr-mh-km-l-staam-r-fy-lyby

How the West Stole Democracy from the Arabs? A Conversation with Elizabeth F. Thompson

Scroll Down for Arabic | شرح الحلقة باللغة العربية في الأسفل Ghayn Podcast returns with a new season and this time with episodes in English and Arabic produced by al-Salon Reviews , a dedicated platform for non-fiction book reviews. In the First Episode of Season Four, Luai Allarakia, professor of Political Science at the University of Richmond, examines a question that challenges one of the most common assumptions about the modern Middle East: Was authoritarianism in the Arab world inevitable? In her book "How the West Stole Democracy from the Arabs: The Syrian Congress of 1920 and the Destruction of Its Historic Liberal-Islamic Alliance", Elizabeth Thompson argues that the answer is no. The book takes us back to the aftermath of the First World War and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. In Damascus, Arab leaders, intellectuals, and activists attempted to build what may have been the Arab world's first modern democratic state. They drafted a constitution, established a representative congress, and sought international recognition for an independent Syria. Yet within months, that experiment was crushed by the same international powers that had claimed to support self-determination and democracy. At the heart of the book is a fascinating and deeply consequential question: Why did one of the earliest democratic experiments in the Arab world fail? Was its collapse the result of internal divisions and political weaknesses, or was it ultimately the product of European colonial ambitions and great-power politics? We invite you to listen to this episode and you can read a review of the book in Arabic via this link.
