As Dr. Fatih Birol, the IEA’s Executive Director, stated it in the previous episode: the EU’s reliance on Russian energy, especially natural gas, was a monumental historic mistake. Prior to 2022, the country accounted for over 40% of the EU’s natural gas supply. Last year the Russian share fell to approximately 15%. To achieve this the EU significantly reduced its demand and replaced Russia with other suppliers. But, at what cost? And which sectors have reduced their demand the most. And how?
I put these and other questions to Ben McWilliams, an economist in the field of Energy and Climate Policy. He is an affiliate fellow at the Brussels-based independent economic think tank Bruegel. Since 2022 he has worked on a monthly overview of European natural gas import flows, storage levels and demand.

De Nederlandse start-up Thorizon is onlangs opgenomen in het nucleaire innovatieprogramma van de Franse overheid. Daarmee komt hún innovatie weer een stap dichterbij: een gesmoltenzoutreactor op thorium en kernafval. Hoe ver is het bedrijf op dit moment? En hoe gaat het met kernenergie? Bedrijven luiden de noodklok: de industrie in Nederland staat onder grote druk. Fabrieken verdwijnen, leggen de productie stil of kunnen niet op eigen kracht hun uitstoot voldoende reduceren. Mag de Staat steun geven? En zo ja: hoe dan? Ik vraag het aan Melvin Könings. Hij werkte zes jaar bij het ministerie van Economische Zaken, daarna vier jaar bij de Europese Commissie en is inmiddels twintig jaar als senior-adviseur staatssteun verbonden aan adviesbureau Lysias.

Vorige week kwam het CBS met cijfers over huishoudelijk gebruik van hout in de haard. En twee weken geleden kreeg de Tweede Kamer een petitie aangeboden tegen ‘grootschalige boomkap’. Hoog tijd dus voor een goed gesprek over houtige biomassa. Over die energiebron, over bosbeheer en bos in Nederland praat ik met Henk Wanningen. Hij studeerde bosbouw, werkt al veertig jaar bij Staatsbosbeheer en is directeur van Bio Enerco, een bedrijf dat van resthout biomassa maakt.
