Back in the day, a major sitcom doing a gay episode was a big deal. A proper gay episode would get headlines, but it would get the attention of two young guys who were still figuring things out — sexuality-wise and culture-wise. Gayest Episode Ever has screenwriter Glen Lakin and stay-at-home journalist Drew Mackie going through the great and not-so-great gay episodes of sitcoms past.

    “Pilot” (September 13, 1990) If we told you that Fox had a sitcom in 1990 about three overweight women, you’d probably imagine that it would have played out like a half-hour version of one of Al Bundy’s rants on Married… With Children. Don’t get us wrong; there are for sure fat jokes on this show, but there’s also something more — an effort to do for women of a certain size what The Golden Girls did for women of a certain age. Whatever the result, it’s better than you’re probably thinking. Wendie Jo Sperber, we didn’t deserve you! NOTE: The one recording of this episode we could find doesn’t have great audio, so forgive the fact that Babes takes place underwater. It didn’t. But maybe if it had it would have lasted longer than one season?

    Yes, we're wrapping up the podcast. Is it Heated Rivalry's fault? Kinda! We had a really good go, but after a lot of conversations about this, we have decided that we will end Gayest Episode Ever with one last ten-episode season. The below episodes will be going live every other week (in the way new episodes have appeared in the feed in the last year), so we're going to be around for some time yet, but this is the plan for the last run of GEE.     “Ladies and Gentlemen... Ernie Lapidus!” (September 30, 1990) Hey, they can’t all be winners… or even pop culture curiosities. We may love Wendy Schaal and we may be Howie Mandel-ambivalent, but the first installment of this short-lived funeral home comedy is pretty clearly the worst show we’ve reviewed for this miniseries, to the point that we’re not even 100 percent sure whether Schaal’s character was supposed to be a ghost or not. But at least you’ll get some revisionist Fox network history! Canonically, they're female superheroes who magically become boys in order to remain in disguise, and as a result some Sailor Moon fans consider them to be trans-coded or metaphorically transgender. It's not really for us to say one way or another, but there's enough discussion about how to discuss these characters' gender that it made sense to cover this episode. Will it be the last?     "Ellen's First Christmess" (December 17, 2001) Yes, we're closing 2025 with a lump of coal rather than a sugarplum fairy. Believe it or not, Ellen Degeneres had a second sitcom between her first one and her reign as the iron-fisted queen of daytime. It's mostly lost in the shuffle today, but we're taking a look at her Christmas episode to point out how she chose to shut up about her sexuality this time around. Was it worth it?     “Pilot” (September 2, 1990) Is Parker Lewis Can’t Lose somehow the best show we’re profiling in this miniseries? Maybe! It’s especially remarkable that a show trying to seem hip and of-the-moment to young people can look good 35 years later, but this show really does it though a combination of surreal humor, inventive camera angles and the guts to make a sitcom that didn’t look like anything that aired on network TV before.
