God Desires our Worship | Shannon O'Dell

Week 4 of Cosmetheology Instead of Cosmetology. This week Pastor Shannon O'Dell is in Luke 7, where a woman with a reputation walks into a Pharisee's house, breaks open an alabaster jar, and wipes Jesus' feet with her hair. The message works through what she did and what Simon didn't. Praise is where Jesus shows up. Her past became her worship. And you get two options in the story: question it from a safe distance, or quit your old life and pour it out. It lands on the part most of us skip. Jesus already told us what he likes in worship, so stop projecting your version onto him and go read the receipts.

How to Understand How Much God Loves You | Shannon O'Dell

Week 3 of Cosmetheology Instead of Cosmetology. There are more than 100 verses about hair in Scripture, and this week Pastor Shannon O'Dell lands on one of the most personal ones. Out of Matthew 10, Jesus says the very hairs on your head are numbered. Not counted. Numbered. And in the original language, it was already finished before the world was made. The message works out what that means for how you live: fear God instead of everybody else's opinion, trust that you matter, give him all of yourself instead of a trimmed public version, and quit living in proving mode. It ends on the dream you've had sitting on the back burner, and five things that move it to the front.

Don't Waste Your Future on a Feeling | Shannon O'Dell

Week 2 of our series on the stories of hair in Scripture. Last week was Absalom. This week Pastor Shannon O'Dell takes on Esau, the hairiest man in the Bible, and the day he traded his birthright for a bowl of soup. Out of Genesis 25 through 32, the message unpacks what he calls the Esau syndrome: trading the when and then of heaven for the here and now of earth. It covers how to dodge impulse and hold onto your inheritance, two warnings for parents out of Isaac and Rebekah, and what changed in Jacob at the Jabbok when he finally stopped running. It ends where the whole thing has been going. A new name, a new walk, and change that carries past you to the next generation.

Victory is found in the Woods | Shannon O'Dell

Absalom had everything going for him. Good looks, a following, and five pounds of hair he weighed in front of the whole town once a year. He also had ambition his father never handed him, and it cost him his life in a forest outside the city. In this message, Pastor Shannon O'Dell walks through 2 Samuel 14 through 18 and what the Bible has to say about hair, image, and the environments we wander into. The woods killed more of Absalom's men than the sword did. They were good soldiers. They were just in the wrong place. If you've been fighting a battle you were never called to fight, or carrying bitterness toward someone who hurt you, this one is for you. Scripture referenced: Matthew 10:30, 2 Samuel 14:25-26, 2 Samuel 15:1, 2 Samuel 15:6, 2 Samuel 15:24, 2 Samuel 16:23, 2 Samuel 18:5, 2 Samuel 18:8-9

Avoid Parenting Trouble | Shannon O'Dell

Family Game Night, Week 4. This week Pastor Shannon O'Dell pulls out the OG Trouble box and talks about kids, because kids are trouble. The message walks through three "pop-o-matic parenting myths" a lot of Christian homes believe, then gets into what actually shapes the next generation. Out of 1 Timothy 3, Deuteronomy 6, and Hebrews 12, it comes down to getting your vertical relationship with Jesus right so the horizontal ones work. If you're a parent, a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a coach, or a teacher, this one is for you. It closes with four things you can start tonight, and a reminder that it's not too late.

Sorry is Not Enough | Shannon O'Dell

Family Game Night, Week 3. This week Pastor Shannon O'Dell uses the game "Sorry!" to get at the difference between being sorry and actually asking for forgiveness. Out of 2 Corinthians 7, the message walks through what godly sorrow produces in a person and why worldly sorrow just leaves you with regret. It also gets into living offended, what offense does to your relationships over time, and the three words most people can't get out of their mouth. If you're carrying something from 2012 or 20 years ago, this one's for you.

Your Words Shape Your Home | Shannon O'Dell

Family Game Night, Week 2: Scrabble | Pastor Shannon O'Dell | Brand New Church In Scrabble you don't just play the first word you see. You look at the tiles you were handed and work for the best possible play. Pastor Shannon uses that picture to talk about communication in your home. Most relationship problems come down to a communication problem, and the words we throw out reactively are usually the ones that do the damage. This week covers six things worth scratching out better words for: your feelings, conflict, priorities, habits, building people up, and honor. Honor is the one that changes the game. Mark 6 says Jesus could not do miracles in his hometown because they would not honor him, and dishonor at home still costs us more than we realize. 10 verses to center your home on: Philippians 2:14 Proverbs 26:18-19 Proverbs 10:19 Joshua 24:15 Philippians 4:13 1 Corinthians 15:33 Hebrews 10:35 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Philippians 2:4 1 Corinthians 13:5 Also referenced: Proverbs 3:3-4, Philippians 2:5, Ephesians 4:25-26, Matthew 6:33, Ephesians 6:1, Colossians 3:20, 1 Peter 2:17, John 1:14, Mark 6:4-5, 1 Peter 3:7 All of these verses are in the Brand New Church app, ready to copy and send to yourself.

Build Your Family on a Sold Foundation | Shannon O'Dell

Jenga is Swahili for "build." You stack 18 levels, three blocks wide, and then everybody starts pulling pieces out. The tower stands or falls on one thing: what's underneath. Pastor Shannon opens a new series on the family with the game on stage and five building blocks that decide whether a home holds up. Authority. A Roman officer in Matthew 8 gets something most religious people missed, and Jesus is amazed by it. Get the order right (God, then your spouse, then your kids, then your job) and everything else has somewhere to sit. The Bible never says family first. It says seek first the kingdom. Identity. The day your identity shifts from Jesus to your kids is the day you stop living for Jesus and start living for them. Children are arrows, and arrows have a target. Three ways parents get this wrong: performance, reputation management, and emotional dependence. Plus the one nobody wants to hear, living vicariously through your kids instead of releasing them to be victorious. Responsibility. Nobody shapes your child's soul but you. Some homes are run by CEO kids who set the calendar, decide about church, and call the shots. Parents, be the CEO of your home. Priority. Priorities are what you say. Commitments are what you do. If you want to know what somebody actually prioritizes, don't ask, just look at what they're committed to. Shannon calls it the decision before the decision, and it's why he doesn't have to think about whether he's praying with Cindy tonight. Consistency. You're parenting a worshiper. That doesn't happen in a week. It happens when you do it again, and again, on the days you don't feel like it. Scripture: Matthew 8:5-10, Matthew 6:33, Romans 13:2, Psalm 127:3-5, Ephesians 6:4, 1 Timothy 5:8 Wherever your foundation is right now, you can go back and fix it. That's the whole point of the series. Subscribe for new messages every week from Brand New Church.
