15 AI Execution Patterns | AI Execution Architecture Ch 3

Fifteen execution patterns, from a single model call to workflows that pause and wait for a human. In Chapter 3 of The AI Execution Architecture Playbook, I walk through the execution pattern catalogue: the structure of each pattern, when to use it, real business examples and the controls you need to put in place. The patterns: 1. Single model call: one bounded task, one call, then validation 2. Sequential pipeline: a known sequence where each step depends on the one before it 3. Conditional branching: one decision point routes requests down different paths, including escalation 4. Parallel execution: independent tasks run at the same time, then combine into one result 5. Fan-out and fan-in: divide a large input, process the units in parallel, aggregate the results 6. Fixed loop: the same operation repeated across a known list 7. Condition-controlled loop: generate, evaluate, revise until a measurable completion criteria is met 8. Agent tool loop: observe, decide, use a tool, review the result, repeat 9. Directed acyclic graph: dependency-ordered execution that never returns to an earlier node 10. Stateful cyclic graph: loop, pause, resume and hold state across approval cycles 11. State machine: clear business states where only certain transitions are valid (covered in the deck) 12. Event-driven execution: work starts in response to a real business event 13. Queue-based execution: tasks go into a queue and workers consume them at a controlled rate 14. Scheduled execution: a schedule kicks off a workflow at a defined time 15. Trigger-and-wait: the workflow pauses for external input and resumes when the response arrives Across every pattern, the controls matter: validation, limits, permissions, routing logs and escalation paths.
