    Persevering in the Fire

Some of the most defining moments in God’s story unfold in the background: in disrupted plans, hard decisions, and the quiet resolve to trust God’s word. Today’s message, “Your Finest Hour,” looks at one such moment—when a faithful man chose obedience and courage in the face of confusion and social risk, and God used that decision to bring His saving purposes into the world. Grounded in Ecclesiastes 3:1, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens,” we’ll explore how God’s timing intersects with our lives when things don’t go according to our expectations, and how He can turn seasons of uncertainty into moments of deep significance and grace. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us[c] from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace. So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace. Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?” They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.” He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”

Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

    Be Still

In a city that rarely pauses, we often carry the weight of our schedules, anxieties, and expectations without a break. This week’s message from guest speaker Zelda Cheung titled, “Be Still,” invites us to discover what it means to stop striving and remember who God is in the middle of our everyday lives. Drawing from Psalm 46:10, we will look at how God’s unshakable presence speaks into our chaos, our decisions, and our deepest fears. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, searching for peace, or simply curious about faith, we invite you to worship with us and explore how God calls us to be still and know Him. If you are new to Community Church, WELCOME! We would love to get to know you. Of the Sons of Korah. According to alamoth. A song. God is our refuge and strength,     an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way     and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam     and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,     the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall;     God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;     he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The LORD Almighty is with us;     the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come and see what the LORD has done,     the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease     to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;     he burns the shields with fire. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;     I will be exalted among the nations,     I will be exalted in the earth.” The LORD Almighty is with us;     the God of Jacob is our fortress.

    Doing as Jesus Does

In a city like Hong Kong, it can feel like there’s always more need than we can possibly meet. Yet Jesus looks at the crowds with compassion and speaks of a harvest that is already ready, even when the workers feel few. This Sunday at Community Church Hong Kong, we continue our summer with a message from Rev. Ivan Chung titled “Doing as Jesus Does.” Together we’ll consider how Jesus responds to the people around Him—and what it looks like for us, in our everyday lives, to step into His work with open hearts and willing hands. Whether you’re exploring faith or have followed Jesus for many years, we invite you to join us as we worship, listen to Scripture, and ask God to show us the part He is calling each of us to play in His harvest. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”

Summer at Community: Hitting Breaking Point

Ever feel like you’re standing on the edge, carrying more than you know how to hold? In this week’s message, “Hitting Breaking Point,” we explore what it means to bring our exhaustion, questions and hidden burdens to Jesus and discover the rest he offers right in the middle of real life in Hong Kong. Whether you’re a long-time follower of Jesus, newly exploring faith, or simply feeling worn out, we pray this service helps you encounter the One who knows you, loves you and invites you to lay down what you were never meant to carry alone. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, ‘May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.’ Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. ‘I have had enough, LORD,’ he said. ‘Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.’ Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat.’ He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.’ So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he travelled for forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. There he went into a cave and spent the night. The LORD appears to Elijah And the word of the Lord came to him: ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ He replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.’ The LORD said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.’ Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’

How Jesus Completes the Story: Our Ultimate Hope: God With Us

We live in a world marked by tears, loss, and the ache of things not yet made right. Yet the Christian story points us toward a future where God himself draws near, wipes away every tear, and brings an end to death, mourning, crying, and pain. This Sunday, we’re exploring how that promised future changes the way we live, grieve, and hope in the present. Join us as we worship together and look to Jesus, the One who completes the story and anchors our ultimate hope. If you are new to Community Church, WELCOME! We would love to get to know you. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling-place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death” or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ [...] Eden restored Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.
