the constant "you might also like" episodes wasting space on my phone was one thing, the over-polished cheesy intro narration was another, but the pro-ai stance put me over the edge. removing this show from my subscriptions.

I’ve listened to Frugal Friends for years. What kept me coming back was that it felt grounded in real life and connected to everyday people trying to make thoughtful decisions about money. It was approachable, relatable, and refreshingly different from so much of the personal-finance world. Episode 644 was the episode that made me realize this podcast may no longer be for me. Listening to an episode largely devoted to talking about building an AI financial-planning product, raising money, investors, monetization, and the business behind it felt incredibly disconnected from the audience that helped build this platform in the first place. I don’t begrudge anyone success or the opportunity to build a business. But there is a difference between growing alongside your audience and changing the relationship with that audience. Frugal Friends used to feel like two people talking with everyday people about navigating money and life. Episode 644 felt like listening to startup founders talk about their product, their funding, their business model, and what they want their audience to become customers of. And that distinction matters. The irony of hearing this shift on a podcast built around frugality was especially hard to ignore. The people who listened, downloaded episodes, recommended the show, bought books, attended events, and helped create the community are the reason there is now a platform valuable enough to monetize in these new ways. Hearing the conversation move so casually toward AI financial planning and investment-backed product development without seemingly recognizing how that might land with longtime listeners felt remarkably tone-deaf. What I loved about Frugal Friends was never access to another financial product. It was the humanity of it. It was hearing conversations about how regular people actually live, spend, save, struggle, change their habits, and define enough for themselves. There are already endless apps, algorithms, financial platforms, subscriptions, and companies trying to optimize our money. I didn’t listen to Frugal Friends because I needed another one. I listened because it felt human. Episode 644 felt like a departure from that, and unfortunately, it alienated at least one longtime listener who helped support the show before there was an AI product to sell.

I found this podcast after finding their book on Libby, and it has completely changed the way I interact with money for the better! I used to just kind of wing it with my finances which caused a lot of anxiety. Thanks to the information that Jen and Jill provide in such a friendly, accessible format, I know where my money is going, have saved so much in all aspects of my newly implemented budget, and am finally feeling at peace with money and confident in my ability to tackle my last bits of debt.
