Whistleblowing in the UK, Ep. 2: Is it ‘British’ to pay whistleblowers?

In the UK, whistleblowers are encouraged to report wrongdoing, but often at cost to their livelihoods and careers. One solution would be to pay corporate whistleblowers for coming forward. However, many in government have held the idea for years that doing so is not very “British.” But now, longtime opposition to the idea seems to be shifting. Suzi Ring, the FT’s legal correspondent in London, explains how and why. I really enjoy Behind the Money podcasts and this one about GE Vernon is a good example. The podcast provided good information but am sorry to note that the speech quality of Amanda Chu makes it so difficult to understand. Please, please get some speech training, you are a great reporter, Michaela Tindera, - keep up the great work.
Focus on Fidelity

The program on Fidelity was interesting. Unfortunately, the presenters did not discuss how Fidelity is likely to address the problems and challenges of selling private equity assets to retail investors and 401k account holders. The issues associated with private equity assets are frequently highlighted in the Financial Times! This foray into the private equity world is not going to end well. A brief mention should have been made about the potential dangers of private equity assets. Similarly, how Fidelity is planning to confront the problems — problems that have been extensively discussed in the pages of FT ! — posed by stable coins, particularly when it sells them to retail investors and 401k account holders, is sadly missing in this discussion. Providing these insights would have made this episode of podcast lot more useful and valuable.

In almost 30 minutes of discussion about OpenAI no one discussed the obvious. For OpenAI to massively grow revenue they have to stay in the lead. Anthropic, Google, xAI, and even Deepseek will have something to say about that. OpenAIs lead has dwindled, the gap between commercial and freely available AI models has closed, and many competitors have healthy cash flow already.
