Southwestern Research with Michelle Mikkelson part 3 - Land, Mining and Agricultural Records

Southwestern Research with Michelle Mikkelson part 3 - Land, Mining and Agricultural Records

In this podcast episode, Diana and Nicole talk with guest Michelle Mickelson, AG, about the significance of the Homestead Act of 1862 in spurring westward expansion and its implications for genealogy. They explore how this act allowed people to claim and cultivate land in states like Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah, and discuss how genealogists can access these land records through the National Archives, Bureau of Land Management’s General Land Office, and state archives. The documents typically include crucial details such as land location, descriptions, and proof of improvements, essential for tracing ancestry. The episode also covers the complexities of understanding land grant documents, the influence of Spanish and Mexican governance on land grants, and modern tools like GIS for mapping ancestral properties. Additionally, they discuss related topics such as mining and agricultural records, irrigation and water rights, and offer practical advice for accessing and interpreting these records to uncover more about one's ancestors.

RLP 302: Examining Family Lore - Was Eliza Isenhour a Cherokee?

RLP 302: Examining Family Lore - Was Eliza Isenhour a Cherokee?

Today's episode of Research Like a Pro is about the story of Eliza Ann Isenhour (1850-1898) and the family lore that claims she was a full-blooded Cherokee. The conversation starts with the 1884 incident that left Eliza a widow with four young children and another on the way after her husband, William Henderson Shults, died following an accident. Faced with the challenges of widowhood, Eliza remarries Jacob Meek, and they eventually move to Indian Territory, where she dies in 1898. Despite family stories, evidence suggests Eliza was not Cherokee.
Diana and Nicole talk about Eliza's early life, born in Arkansas, her family's relocation following her father's death, and her eventual move to Texas. They highlight the family's migration to Coryell County, Texas, by 1870, setting the stage for later moves that would define Eliza's journey. Central to their conversation is the family's relocation to Indian Territory in the late 19th century, driven by legislative changes and opportunities for land. They examine whether Eliza and Jacob's move was part of the 1889 land grab or if they qualified for tribal membership based on family stories of Eliza's Cherokee ancestry.
Through research, Diana and Nicole find that Eliza did not have Native American bloodlines, with her husband Jacob being ¼ Choctaw. This discovery leads them to reconsider the family narrative, suggesting the lore of Eliza's Cherokee heritage may be rooted in her step-children's Choctaw background rather than factual history. They conclude by emphasizing the role of research in affirming or refuting family stories. The tale of Eliza Ann Isenhour exemplifies how family lore can morph over time and underscores the significance of a thorough and open-minded approach to uncovering historical truths.

Genealogy and DNA Research in Phases

Genealogy and DNA Research in Phases

In this episode, we discuss breaking up complex research projects into phases. This is a great way to make progress on a research question that might otherwise seem daunting. We'll talk about how to identify the mother of Elsie, a woman born in 1820, as an example of how to set up phases for research. We'll also discuss how to determine which phases are necessary and how to write research objectives. We wrap it up with a discussion of Diana's Clemsy Cline project phases.
The Clemsy Cline project sought to identify the father of Mary "Clemsey" Cline. Clemsy was born about 1817 in Alabama and died after 1880 in Wise County, Texas. She married William Henderson Weatherford in about 1839 in Arkansas.
Phase 1 of the project focused on finding a candidate for Clemsy's father. Diana analyzed census records from 1850, 1860, and 1880 and concluded that she was most likely born between 1817 and 1820 in Alabama. Her father would have been born before 1800 in Virginia. The researchers also found that Clemsy was associated with a number of people in Arkansas, including Jacob Cline, Mahala Cline, and John Cline. These individuals were all living in the same area at the time that Clemsy was born, and they may have been able to provide some clues about her father's identity.
Phase 2 of the project focused on exploring the land patents of Clemsy Cline's FANs. Diana identified three Cline individuals who patented land in Izard County, Arkansas, between 1838 and 1850: John C. Cline, Mahala Cline, and John Cline. Diana believes that these land patents may provide some clues about the father of Clemsy Cline.
Phase 3 of the Clemsy Cline project is currently ongoing andseeks to test the hypothesis that John C. Cline was the biological father of Clemsy Cline. Using DNA evidence and documentary research, Diana has found a cluster of Clines in a network graph. This cluster includes descendants of Mahala Cline Shockley and descendants of John C. Cline through his 1850 census family with probable second wife, Milky Cline.

Just one beef.

So love this show and it has earned my 5 star rating. After reading the first page of the first book I knew I this book needed to be purchased well done.

My only beef from listening to the podcast would be the sound. Nicole’s voice sounds great! Diane in my opinion needs an update. Whenever I listen echos of her voice ring in my head. Have you lovely ladies thought about investing in microphones? It would help the volume control and keep the listener concentrating on your content. Just my two cents.

Thanks for all your great work and keep it up! Love this this!

The Sanitization of Historical Events is Disappointing

I’ve just started the podcast and twice the host has covered the migration of her family into lands formerly held by indigenous tribes and the wording is so completely sanitized. It makes it very difficult to listen to the discussions knowing that the historical context is being scrubbed. Family history is a great tool for growth and reconciling events of the past but not if we talk about it in this incredibly insensitive way.

Love this show

I absolutely love the content of this show. Been listening for at least a year. The genealogical research is done so carefully, and we’ll shared.

I will say, I often listen to podcasts while I’m out and about (gym, commute), and I would maybe point out to hosts that the volume seems much much lower than other podcasts. Perhaps a tweak of the audio might be in order?
