Some of us know how to work, produce, serve, lead, and keep going. We just do not know how to stop. And eventually, when your value gets tied to your output, rest starts to feel like failure. In Mark 6, Jesus looks at disciples who have been doing exactly what He called them to do, preaching, serving, healing, and ministering, and tells them: “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” In this message, Pastor Mark talks about: • Why rest belongs in a series about running to win • The difference between living like a son and living like a tool • Why productivity does not determine your value • How rest was built into creation from the beginning • Why Adam experienced rest before he had accomplished anything • Why rest is not a reward for productivity • How being needed can start feeling like being valuable • Why Jesus invited His disciples to rest before they asked for it • How rest can become an act of faith • The difference between healthy rest and spiritual drifting • Why grace does not eliminate good works • What Sabbath can look like for followers of Jesus today • Why Jesus is ultimately our deepest rest • What “It is finished” means for people who are exhausted from trying to prove themselves Here is the truth: A son rests. A tool breaks. A tool exists for what it can produce. A son is loved because he belongs to the family. Some of us have started relating to God like we are tools in His shed. “Give me another assignment.” “Let me prove I can handle it.” “Let me accomplish one more thing.” And when we get tired, we feel guilty. But Jesus does not relate to His people as disposable tools. He invites us to come away and rest. Rest is not quitting the race. It is sitting down beside the Lord of the race. And rest is also not permission to hide from responsibility. There is a difference between resting and drifting. Purpose without rest becomes exhaustion, but rest without purpose can become avoidance. Ultimately, Jesus does not simply give us rest. Jesus is our rest. On the cross He said: “It is finished.” You do not have to work your way into God’s love. You do not have to become productive enough, successful enough, disciplined enough, or spiritual enough to convince God to accept you. Jesus accomplished what you never could. So yes, run. Work. Serve. Obey. Become more like Jesus. But do not run to earn your place in the family. Run because Jesus has already brought you into it.
