Marina Conway-Gordon: The Real Life of Brands

Today I am joined by Marina Conway-Gordon. A content coach who shows brand leaders and teams how to articulate the real beating heart of the brand online, and how to start talking about the things that really matter to their community. In late 2018 Marina founded The Real Life of Brands.  A Content Consultancy and Media Production Company, which helps brand leaders to raise their profile in an authentic way, using content that highlights real themes and stories. With previous years spent in marketing content creation, fundraising, media writing and brand documentary through social media, not to mention eight years as a holistic therapist, Marina combines these skills to shine a light on the humans in business and the purpose that drives the brand. The Real Life of Brands is also growing non promotional platforms for real stories, from behind brands with the aim of fostering more authenticity, and empathy in business. She's got a lot to say and I'm so excited to have her joining the podcast today. ***3 Attention Grabbers*** 👉 Imperfections: Why it's important to be real, open and honest. 👉 Get a visibility buddy: Having accountability helps keep you on track.  👉 Know that expectations are currently low: Not having high end content and production can often be a lot more authentic. Review of Netflix Documentary: The Social Dilemma

This documentary from Jeff Orlowski explores how addiction and privacy breaches are features, not bugs, of social media platforms.  It calls for an overhaul of big tech business models and ending online corporate surveillance.  2020 has underscored just how much we rely on technology to connect, learn, organise, and live our lives. But the business model of big tech poses an unprecedented threat to our human rights - harvesting and monetising the data of a third of the world’s population and trapping us in a system where we are forced to either submit to pervasive tracking or forego this critical lifeline. I’ve asked a few members from Team Brandlective to join this conversation. IMPORTANT REFERENCES & CORRECTIONS: BREXIT: We discussed the movie Brexit featuring Benedict Cumberbatch on this episode which is feature-length documentary film to inspire as many people as possible to vote to LEAVE the EU in the June 23rd referendum. Watch the Trailer FLAT EARTH CONSPIRACY: Kyrie Irving is mentioned in this podcast episode and we incorrectly reference the NFL rather than the NBA (sorry Kyrie).  He does in fact play, American Basketball (not Football). AMERICAN NEWS NETWORKS: Who controls the media in the United States? In the podcast, we reference only 2 people owning the media networks.  After a fact check we can confirm it is actually six conglomerates control most of the broadcast media in the United States: CBS Corporation, Comcast, Time Warner, 21st Century Fox (formerly News Corporation), Viacom, and The Walt Disney Company.
