This day is to honor, acknowledge and support 1st-generation students across America.  1st generation students are the first to attend college in their family. Research on 1st-gen students shows that a lack of cultural capital contributes to the gap in college complete rates between 1st-generation and their other-generation peers.     Episode 21: Girl vs Grad School with Mattie Hawkins

    There are millions of students beginning graduate school this fall so this episode is the perfect way to end our college grad series. Mattie Hawkins is our guest on this series. Mattie Hawkins, is a 2017 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University. She is currently pursuing a Masters of Science degree in Health & Kinesiology with a primary concentration in Sports Management and is expected to graduate in December. Mattie also is employed as a graduate assistant for the Office of Multicultural & International Student Affairs where she focuses on multicultural programming and leadership development. Outside of her studies and work in student affairs, Mattie served as the Diversity & Inclusion Coordinator for the Student Government Association from 2017-2019, Social Media Liaison for the EvolveU High School Conference Leadership Conference Committee, a member of the Auxiliary Services Advisory Board, the Vice President's Student Advisory Leadership Council and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Additionally, Mattie serves as the College Ministry Team Leader for Beacon Light Baptist Church of Hammond. And in 2017, Mattie was crowned as Southeastern Louisiana University's Homecoming Queen. Mattie is nearing the end of her program and is a grad school pro. She is joining us to give advice to new graduate students on how transition to a higher level of academics and how to adapt to new academic, personal and professional expectations.     Episode 18: Success 101: Beyonce's Homecoming

    Beyonce's Netflix documentary, Homecoming, was epic for so many reasons. One, she captured the journey to making history as the first African-American woman to headline Coachella.  Two, the documentary highlighted her first performance after giving birth to twins.  Three, the film showed how and why Beyonce showcased Historically Black Colleges and Universities in her comeback show.  The rest of the reasons just relate to her performance, period :) . Dr. Erin Wheeler, host of the podcast, would count her self as a fan of Beyonce, more so for her business savvy, cultural awareness, and work ethic. In this episode, Dr. Erin shares her reflections on Homecoming as lesson of success.  She shares five behaviors that Beyonce displayed that has led to her sustained success.
