    EP 88 Mario Vega

Mario Vega What does it really mean to be a good father? And are we preparing our children for the world they're growing up in? In Episode 88 of the Good Old Boy Podcast, Buster sits down with longtime friend and licensed counselor Mario Vega for a conversation about fatherhood, faith, family, and the challenges facing today's generation. With nearly 15 years of experience working with children and teenagers, Mario has witnessed firsthand how family dynamics, technology, and the presence—or absence—of strong male role models can shape a child's future. Together, Buster and Mario explore the realities of raising kids in a world dominated by social media, instant gratification, and constant distractions. They discuss why children need to experience failure, how parents can establish boundaries without sacrificing love, and why simply being physically present isn't enough. But this conversation goes beyond parenting. It's about understanding the responsibility men have to their families, their communities, and the next generation. Mario shares his journey into counseling, how finding Jesus gave his work a deeper purpose, and why strong men don't have to choose between authority and compassion. They also explore an incredible story about young elephants growing up without mature male role models—and what happened when experienced males were introduced into their environment. Sometimes the greatest thing a man can do isn't something extraordinary. It's simply showing up, loving his family, and leading by example. And when Buster asks Mario to leave the audience with one piece of Good Old Boy wisdom, his answer is simple: "Enjoy in good health." Because life is happening right now. Don't wait until you've run out of time, energy, or opportunity to start living it. In This Episode The challenges facing today's children and teenagers How social media and technology are changing childhood Why fathers need to be present AND involved The importance of strong male role models Teaching children how to lose and overcome failure Balancing grace, accountability, and unconditional love How faith shapes leadership and fatherhood Why building relationships is the foundation of discipline The importance of brotherhood and surrounding yourself with good men Making the most of your time, money, and energy Faith. EP 84 Nathan Bennett

EP 84 Nathan Bennett What happens when you stop trying to be just one kind of athlete? In this episode of The Good Old Boy Podcast, Buster sits down with Nathan Bennett — a self-described “fitness butterfly” who has bounced from GORUCK events and F3 to running, strongman competitions, hiking, bodybuilding, and whatever challenge happens to catch his attention next. Nathan shares how he went from being relatively inactive to discovering that he was capable of doing far more than he ever realized. Along the way, the conversation gets into the value of doing hard things, Type 2 fun, suffering alongside your buddies, and why sometimes the best way to grow is simply to sign up for something that scares you a little. Nathan also takes us behind the scenes of preparing for his first bodybuilding competition — the meal prep, training, sacrifices, spray tan, posing, and mental battle that comes with getting stage-ready. But just three weeks before his original competition date, a serious health setback forced him to pull out and reevaluate everything he had been working toward. Instead of quitting, Nathan recovered, reset the goal, and got back after it. Buster and Nathan also talk about something that often gets overlooked when chasing ambitious goals: the impact those goals have on your wife, family, friendships, and everyday life. Personal improvement is great, but not when the people closest to you are constantly paying the price for it. Ultimately, this episode isn't really about bodybuilding, running, rucking, or strongman. It's about being willing to try. Nathan's Good Old Boy wisdom sums it up perfectly: don't let the fear of failure keep you from trying something different. You're probably capable of far more than you realize. Maybe you don't need to find your one thing. Maybe you just need to become a fitness butterfly. EP 83 - Billy Gaskey & Travis Green "Surrender the Glory"

EP 83 - Billy Gaskey & Travis Green "Surrender the Glory" Billy Gaskey and Travis Green, hosts of the Surrender the Glory Podcast, finally sit down with Buster for a conversation that has been a couple of years in the making. What starts with homeschooling, raising kids, and building community quickly turns into a much deeper conversation about faith, fatherhood, mentoring young men, vulnerability, and what happens when men stop giving the automatic “I’m good” answer. Billy and Travis share their experiences working with young men through church and youth ministry, including why connection has to come before correction and why today's young men need trustworthy adults willing to walk beside them, listen, and have conversations that aren't always comfortable. The guys also dig into the mission behind Surrender the Glory: giving people a place to tell their testimony. Not every story needs addiction, disaster, or a rock-bottom comeback. Sometimes the testimony is simply remaining faithful through ordinary life. Every story has value, because a story that seems ordinary to you may be exactly what someone else needs to hear. And because this is still the Good Old Boy Podcast, it doesn't stay serious the whole time. The conversation wanders through rucking, growing up in the '80s and '90s, questionable childhood decisions, Antarctica, Missing 411, dolphins, conspiracy theories, and plenty of other rabbit holes. Underneath it all, though, is a conversation about men showing up for their families, showing up for younger generations, showing up for one another, and being willing to admit when life isn't as simple as “I'm good.” As Travis puts it, men often carry things because they don't want to burden somebody else—but sometimes talking about it is exactly what takes a little weight out of the backpack. EP 81 - Fernando Chavira

EP 81 - Fernando Chavira In Episode 81 of The Good Old Boy Podcast, Fernando Chavira sits down for a raw conversation about what happens when the life that looks good on paper no longer feels right. Fernando shares his journey from chasing money, cars, relationships, partying, and the traditional definition of success to realizing that the real work had to happen internally. After recognizing destructive patterns in his relationships and his relationship with alcohol, he made the decision to take responsibility for his life, quit drinking, change careers, lean into his faith, and start becoming the man he actually wanted to be. The conversation gets into accountability, fear, faith, vulnerability, career changes, relationships, emotional awareness, and the importance of having people around you who are willing to speak into your life. One of the biggest themes is that perfection isn't the goal — consistency is. Sometimes the best thing you can do when you're overwhelmed is recognize what's happening, take one step, and call someone you trust. Fernando also challenges the idea that we should regret learning life's lessons "too late." Maybe some lessons can only be learned in certain seasons. The difficult chapters aren't interruptions to the story — they're part of what makes the story worth telling.
