A common response to a woman coming forward about sexual assault is no response at all. Beyond the failings of law enforcement and the court system to provide justice, it is, perhaps most painfully, family and friends that let victims down. “This Happened” is one woman’s exploration of this phenomenon. To find out why her friends and family dismissed the news that she had been sexually assaulted by someone they knew, she asks them, and records what they have to say.

In this limited five part series, you’ll hear those conversations. You’ll learn why her friends did what they did. Their answers are personal and painful, but they paint a broader picture of how rape culture works, how pervasive it is, and the damage it can do.

Authentic, vulnerable and courageous

Everyone needs to listen to this podcast. Janey does an amazing job expressing her experiences and emotions while staying so compassionate for everyone that was aware of the sexual abuse she had experienced. This helped me so much with my own experiences by hearing all sides of her story. Thank you Janey for speaking your voice and sharing so deeply.

Brave, challenging, insightful, and thoughtful.

This podcast is amazing in its simplicity. And in the courage of Janey, who is asking the questions. A must-listen.

Thank You Janey

This might just be the bravest and most honest look at what victims face that I have ever encountered. I think victims, not only of assault, but abuse, violence, injustice and shame will find some solace in the honesty of this podcast. Thank you for talking about hard things and thank you for this very brave work.
