Coach Simmons is in her 3rd season at Grambling, notching 23 wins in her first season, a program record for a first-year head coach. Last season, the momentum continued, finishing with a 15-15 overall record with a strong 8-3 home record. Before taking the reins at GSU, Courtney spent a decade as the recruiting coordinator at Troy University, where she helped guide the Trojans to five Sun Belt Championships and six postseason berths, including three NCAA Tournament appearances. Coach Simmons is a native of Baton Rouge, LA, and has a bachelor’s Degree from the University of Louisville, where she helped the Cardinals to two NCAA Tournament berths and a Sweet 16 appearance. Coach Messer is on a very short list of coaches that has played in a Final Four, at Arkansas and coached a National Championship, at Baylor. She has also coached on 12 conference championship teams, 6 Sweet 16s, 5 Elite Eights, has multiple WNBA Draft picks under her tutelage and all within the last decade and many of those tournament accolades came within the past six years. And I didn’t even mention the fact that she is a Hall of Famer, inducted by the University of Arkansas in 2018. Coach Messer reflects on her career, talks about Baylor and gives our listeners a couple of players to look out for as Baylor heads into this year’s tournament, she also talks about what it would mean for Baylor to win a national championship in the home state of Texas.
