208 - Espíritu by Aiden Thomas

In Episode 208, we're talking about Espíritu by Aiden Thomas, the sequel to Cemetery Boys, which we talked about way back in Episode 57!  It was so much fun to be back with these characters and in their world of spirits and brujx. We wish we could have spent more time with them. Maybe a book for our girl Maritza next? We would be all over that! Show Notes Episode 57, where we talked about Cemetery Boys, was our very first FUJK episode after abandoning our previous plan to discuss a certain wizard series. We've read so many incredible books by trans authors since then! Do you believe in spirits? On record, we now know that Jette wants her funeral to be an exact recreation of the My Chemical Romance "Helena" music video. If you want to know more about the grandma who had paper Ouija boards handed out at her funeral with a note saying, "Let's keep in touch," here you go. No, but seriously, please can Maritza get a book next? Our next episode is our 8th (!!!) anniversary episode.  After that, we'll chatting about Never Whistle At Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology, just in time for spooky season. And don't forget to read along with us for our book club, Moonflow by Bitter Karella. Episode coming in early November! Other Books Mentioned Somebody Is Walking on Your Grave by Mariana Enriquez

207 - What We Found Instead - An Interview with Heidi Reimer

In Episode 207, we have a wonderful chat with Canadian author Heidi Reimer about her new novel, What We Found Instead, as well as writing routines, plotting, and book recommendations. Show Notes It was so fantastic to have the chance to talk to Heidi about her process writing this book and learning how to craft a novel. Find Heidi’s debut novel, The Mother Act, wherever books are sold. Online you can find Heidi on her website, www.heidireimer.com, on Instagram @heidi.c.reimer, and on Substack, The Visibility Letters. Heidi also coaches writers through the Sarah Selecky Writing School, where she offers coaching for first drafts and revisions. 206 - The Dream Thieves (Graphic Novel) by Maggie Stiefvater

In episode 206, we talk about our latest book club book, the graphic novel adaptation of The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater, illustrated by Sas Milledge. This is the second book in The Raven Cycle series, and this one may have convinced Jette to pick up the original novels! Show Notes This is Gen’s favourite of the four books in the series because it’s Ronan’s book. We talked about the first graphic novel adaptation in Episode 180. We also read Sas Milledge’s debut graphic novel, Mamo, in Episode 194. Our next book club is Jette’s pick and we’re reading Moonflow by Bitter Karella. More creepy mushrooms and fungus! Next week we’ll be chatting with Heidi Reimer about her new novel, What We Found Instead. And to close out September, we’re revisiting an old favourite and reading the long-awaited sequel to Cemetery Boys—Espíritu by Aiden Thomas. Other Books Mentioned Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV

    205 - Summer Hangout 2026

Summer is (finally) winding down, and it's time for a hangout episode! As you know, we are not made for the heat, so we've slowed down a bit on the reading and the writing—but don't worry, we're still absolutely crushing our reading goals. Show Notes Gen has done a surprising number of summer activities, and we've even done a bunch together, including a baseball game, a book launch, and a visit to Toronto's Book Bar. Is baseball the most romantic sport?  We had such a great time at the book launch for Fossil Feud by Maggie North, facilitated by Stephanie Archer and hosted by Hopeless Romantic books. We even made a new book friend! Next on our bookish event list is Word on the Street, which Gen can finally go to this year. It's happening September 26 & 27 at David Pecaut Square by Roy Thompson Hall. If you're in Toronto, it's free to attend and always a great time for book lovers, so definitely check it out! Our next episode will be a book club episode, talking about The Dream Thieves graphic novel adaptation by Maggie Stiefvater and illustrated by Sas Milledge.  After that, we'll be chatting with Heidi Reimer about her new book What We Found Instead. It's been a while since we've done an interview and we can't wait! 204 - What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher

In episode 204, Gen and Jette freak out over mushrooms and T. Kingfisher's What Moves the Dead, book 1 in the Sworn Soldier series. Please send Jette all recos for anything fungi-related- books, cute things, forests to run to. Show Notes We both meant to read "The Fall of the House of Usher," which this book is based on, before we recorded, but unfortunately...life. It's on the list now! T. Kingfisher is the pen name of Ursula Vernon. She writes books under both names, differentiating between her work for children (Vernon) and adults (Kingfisher). Our next episode is our summer hangout. Expect more mushrooms and probably (definitely) some Windy City talk. How many books in the series can Gen read before we record? After that, it's book club episode time! The Dream Thieves graphic novel adaptation is officially out, and we'll be talking about it first thing in September. Books mentioned How We End by LM JuniperMexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-GarciaThe Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan PoeWhat Feasts at Night by T. KingfisherWhat Stalks the Deep by T. 203 - Clockers by Richard Price (Film by Spike Lee)

Episode 203 is another instalment in our Page to Screen series. This time we read Clockers by Richard Price and watched the Spike Lee film adaptation of the same name.  We loved how the book and the film each have their own distinct vibe and definitely need to watch more Spike Lee films. (And maybe rewatch The Wire?) Show Notes Richard Price has also written screenplays, including The Wire, The Deuce, and the Martin Scorsese film, The Color of Money, for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. This was Mekhi Phifer's first film, and he got the part through an open casting call. In our next episode, we'll be talking about What Moves the Dead by T Kingfisher. Read along with our next book club pick, the graphic novel adaptation of The Dream Thieves by Maggie Steifvater. Other Films by Spike Lee Do the Right Thing She's Gotta Have It Jungle Fever Malcolm X BlacKkKlansman  Other Books, Authors & Films Mentioned Mystic River  Gone Baby Gone  Dennis Lehane Annihilation The Martian Jurassic Park Under the Bridge

202 - In Her Own League by Liz Tomforde

In Episode 202, we talk about Jette's book club pick, In Her Own League by Liz Tomforde! As you may know, we're deep in our romance era right now—especially sports romance—and we loved Monty and Reese so much!  Show Notes In Her Own League is a spin-off of the best-selling Windy City Series, which is currently in development for a TV series! Emmett "Monty" Montgomery is definitely based on real-life MLB manager Gabe Kapler. You're welcome. Interconnected romance series for the win every time! We can't wait for Liz Tomforde's next series, Wilder Woods, which takes place in California and follows the Wilder siblings. The first instalment, Cardinal Rule, is set to come out next year. So many of these romance authors are Canadian, which we love. We're stoked to be going to the book launch for Fossil Feud by Maggie North, in conversation with Stephanie Archer, author of the hockey romance series Vancouver Storm. Hosted, of course, by Hopeless Romantic Books. In our next episode, we're taking a wildly different turn for our Page to Screen series by reading Clockers by Richard Price and watching the 1995 Spike Lee film adaptation. After that, we'll be doing some summer spooky reading with What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher. Our next book club pick is Gen's, and it's The Dream Thieves graphic novel adaptation of Book 2 of The Raven Cycle Series by Maggie Steifvater, illustrated by Sas Milledge. It's coming out August 4.  Other Books and Authors Mentioned Helena Hunting Off Campus Series by Elle Kennedy  Elsie Silver Becka Mack  Heated Rivalry/Game Changers Series by Rachel Reid

201 - Anderson In Bloom by Jennifer Dugan

It's the end of June, which means it's time for our annual Pride episode! This year, we're talking about Anderson in Bloom by Jennifer Dugan, since we're both deep in our romance era and we love us some queer joy.  Show Notes Is it time for us to move to a small coastal town and live our best storybook romance lives? Jenifer Prince does the cover art for this book. Check out more of her fantastic lesbian art on IG @jeniferrprince For more romance goodness, be sure to listen to episode 199, all about the romance genre. We're continuing with the romance theme for our next episode with In Her Own League by Liz Tomforde. And we're even going to a baseball game soon to get in the full spirit of things!
