    The Law and Sin | Romans 7:7-13

    After explaining the Gospel in Romans 1-5, Paul turns to dealing with distortions of its message. In Romans 6, he defended God’s grace. Now in Romans 7, he defends God’s Law. Paul knew that his statements about the Law in Romans may lead critics to suggest he thought the Law was bad. Yet he shouts in Romans 7:12, the Law is good! God’s Law serves His purposes by exposing sin, yet sin seeks to seize this good Law and use it to kill us. Paul’s argument that the Law is good, but the Gospel is better, will reach a crescendo in Romans 8:3-4– “For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”  Take-Home Message: God’s good Law exposes sin, but only His Gospel can defeat it. In Defense of the Law: The Law is not sinful; it exposes sin (7).The Law is not sinful; it is seized by sin (7b-8)The Law is not sinful; it is sin that kills me (9-13). Take-Home Lessons: God’s Law is good.Sin can use good things for bad purposes.Sin kills me by lying to me.How does sin use the Law to lie to me?The lie of self-righteousness– I can keep the Law well enough to save myself.The lie of self-indulgence– I cannot keep the Law well enough to save myself, so I might as well get all the fleeting pleasure out of life that I can.The Gospel defeats sin where the Law could not.

    Believers and the Law | Romans 7:1-6

    The term “law” occurs eight times in Romans 7:1-6, and it is among the topics of greatest confusion for believers today. What is the believer in Jesus’ relationship to the Law of Moses and the entire Old Testament? What do we do with this giant first chunk of our Bibles? These verses show us that, while the law is good (Rom. 7:12), Jesus is better. In other words, the New Covenant is better than the Old Covenant. For you “have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God.” (Rom. 7:4)  Take-Home Message: Believers have been joined to a better husband. The Purpose of the Law (1-3) What is the purpose of the Law?A Teacher: The Law teaches me about the Lawmaker.A Mirror: The Law reveals my sinfulness.A Guardian: The Law prepares me for Christ.A Christ-Exalter: The Law reveals and exalts Jesus. The Believer’s New Way of Life (4-6) The Believer’s New Way of Life:Believers have been released from our old way of life (5).Believers have been joined to a better husband (4).Believers are joined to Christ to bear fruit for God (4).Believers bear fruit through the Holy Spirit (6).

    Death or Life? | Romans 6:20–23

    From beginning to end, the Bible presents two paths, one leading to death and one to life. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). It is only in Christ Jesus that a person finds life, and the evidence that a person is in Christ is their spiritual “fruit.” What fruit are you producing, and what does it say about the path you are on? “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (Matthew 7:13–14). Take-Home Message: You are either on the path leading to death or the path leading to life. The path leading to death (20–21). Believers, Unbelievers, and Shame:Believers are not ashamed of Jesus.Believers are ashamed of past sins.Unbelievers take pride in what is shameful.Believers and unbelievers have historically held opposing views of what is shameful.In the end, believers will be vindicated, and unbelievers will be put to shame. The path leading to life (22–23). Roadblocks to Good Fruit:“I don’t know the Bible.”“I don’t know how to put it into practice.”“I don’t want to put it into practice.”

    True Freedom | Romans 6:15-19

    Paul began his letter to the Romans in a rare way, calling himself a slave (doulos) of Christ. He does this only two other times in his letters (Phil 1:1 and Titus 1:1). Doulos (slave) means someone who belongs to another, without any ownership rights of their own. We American Christians love our freedom, and may bristle at the idea that we are slaves. Yet, doulos is used with the highest dignity in the NT – namely, of believers who willingly live under Christ's authority as His devoted followers. In Romans 6:15-19, Paul urges us to embrace our slavery to God through the righteousness found in Christ. Freedom isn’t about having no constraints, it’s about having the right constraints, the ones that actually free us. Slavery to sin is a cruel master, but slavery to God leads to true freedom. For Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed (John 8:34-36). Take-Home Message: True freedom is found in presenting yourself to God. The freedom of presenting yourself to God (15-16). We are all slaves. We are slaves of the one whom we obey. Slavery to sin leads to death. Slavery to God leads to life. The freedom of presenting your heart to God (17-18).     Killing Sin | Romans 6:12-14

    John Owen famously said, “Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you.” The war with sin connects us with all people of all times, because the sin problem is timeless and universal. None of our technological advances have fixed our sinful nature, guilty conscience, or separation from God. What makes Romans relevant today is that it speaks to this seemingly impossible issue. The key to killing sin lies in answering this question: Who is King of your life? Take-Home Question: I cannot kill sin without a new King. The War Against Sin (12-13) The War: Between God and Sin The Battleground: Your Body The Options Present your members to sin as weapons of unrighteousness Present your members to God as weapons of righteousness The Question: Who is King? God’s Victory Over Sin (14) Living in God’s Victory Over Sin  Reject sin’s reign by treasuring God (12). Resist the body’s sinful desires (12). Run toward righteousness (13). Remember whose you are (14).

    Alive to God | Romans 6:8-11

    Paul spent the first several chapters in Romans laying out bedrock truths of Christianity. Now in Roman 6:11, he gives a strong imperative command: Consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God. This is not a suggestion, but a “must.” Why is it so important? Because being alive to God is the entire purpose of our dying to sin. As one pastor put it, "The glory of Christian redemption is that it is in union with Jesus that we are given back our true selves. We finally begin becoming who we were truly created to be." Take-Home Message: In Christ, I must consider myself dead to sin and alive to God. In Christ, I will be eternally alive to God (8-9). Realities of the Resurrection: We will never die again. We will have transformed bodies. We will never grieve again. We will be renewed. We will live in renewed creation. We will be with our loved ones who died in Christ. We will be rewarded for every loss endured for Christ. We will never experience war again. We will witness true justice. In Christ, I must be presently alive to God (10-11).

    Dead to Sin | Romans 6:1–7

    Romans 1–5 communicates the radical truth that, by faith in Christ’s righteousness alone, apart from any works of our own, we have been declared right with God. Paul ends Romans 5 in the clearest terms possible: “where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” (Rom. 5:20). Not only is this teaching controversial, it is dangerous. Why? Because some may assert that it leads to rampant sinning. However, Paul answers such misunderstandings. To those who would assert, “Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?” Paul responds with the strongest Greek negative available: “By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?” Take-Home Message: In Christ, I am dead to sin. In Christ, I am dead to the pattern of sin (1–4).In Christ, I am dead to the position of sin (5).In Christ, I am dead to the power of sin (6–7).Take-Home Lessons: In Christ, my pattern is replacing sin’s lies with God’s Word.In Christ, my position is not sinner but saint.In Christ, my power is God’s justification.

    Death in Adam, Life in Christ | Romans 5:12-21

    America may be the most individualistic culture in the world, which makes these verses hard for us to understand. We often think of sin as an individual problem that needs individual remedies, but Romans 5:12–21 teaches that it runs much deeper. Paul states that humanity’s ultimate problem is we have inherited Adam’s sin nature. Truly, the apple has not fallen far from the tree. Christianity is the story of another Man’s righteous act overcoming Adam’s transgression. The God-man, Jesus Christ, sacrificed Himself to provide the free gift of grace for all who place their faith in Him. Christ’s act of righteousness far surpasses Adam’s transgression, and now grace abounds to all who trust in Jesus. “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Rom. 8:1) Take-Home Message: Life in Christ defeats death in Adam. Death through Sin in Adam (12–14)Life as a Free Gift in Christ (15–17)Life in Christ Defeats Death in Adam (18–21)Take-Home Lessons: We must embrace the reality that we are children of Adam.We must embrace the righteousness that is only found in Christ.We must embrace the reign of our new life in Christ.
