    FootballTalk - Episode 228: Hull City's charge on track, Doncaster Rovers on the rise and all change at Rotherham United

    On this week’s show, Leon Wobschall and Stuart Rayner join host Mark Singleton and start off by assessing the Yorkshire derby between Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday – when the Tigers came from behind to win 3-1, maintaining their push for automatic promotion while piling on the agony for the beleagured Owls. In another Yorkshire derby, Doncaster Rovers took the points in a 1-0 win over Barnsley, before winning by the same scoreline against Port Vale to offer hope of a strong finish to what has been a testing first season back in League One.  Following last week’s sacking of Matt Hamshaw – which happened while last week’s podcast was being recorded – the Millers have moved swiftly to bring in a replacement in the shape of former Huddersfield Town boss Lee Clark.  He had a tough start when overseeing a 3-0 defeat at runaway leaders Lincoln City, but it will have given him an insight into the size of the task he has been handed at the New York Stadium. Off the field, Tony Stewart has transferred the majority stake in the club to his son, Richard.  Finally, Stuart singles out his Yorkshire-based Player of the Week, while Leon picks out which Yorkshire club is deserving of this week’s Team of the Week accolade.

    On this week’s show, The YP’s football writing team of Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton and start at the Riverside with promotion-chasing Middlesbrough - currently gunning for automatic promotion from the Championship.  This week saw them fall to a 1-0 defeat against Charlton Athletic before behind held to a 1-1 draw by Bristol City, a result which leaves them in the top two ahead of this weekend but with a number of rivals breathing hard down their neck.  Bradford City had a similar week, a weekend loss followed by a 1-1 draw in midweek at home to Mansfield town – do the Bantams have what it takes to stay the course and be among the League One play-off contenders? Leeds United secured a vital point in a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace, but they remain just three points above the bottom three. Can they keep enough teams below them come the end of the season? Huddersfield Town remain in the play-off picture following a 2-2 draw with leaders Lincoln City and will be hoping they can collect enough points from their remaining games to secure a top-six finish.  And we assess what remains for Barnsley in their run-in and whether they have enough to make a late charge for the play-offs, or is it already too late? Finally this week, Leon picks out his Yorkshire Player of the Week while Stuart selects the White Rose’s Team of the week.

    The YP’s football writers Leon Wobschall and Stuart Rayner join host Mark Singleton once again to cast their eyes over the last few days of the Yorkshire footballing landscape.  This week, they start with the League One Yorkshire derby between Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United, one which saw the Terriers edge to a 1-0 win and maintain their play-off hopes, while making life more difficult down the bottom for the Millers. Sheffield Wednesday claimed their first point in 14 games with a 1-1 draw against Watford, while steps towards new ownership seemed to move forward, making for a rare positive week..  Hull City enjoyed a mixed week, losing 3-1 to Millwall while getting the better of Wrexham on Tuesday – but how does that leave their automatic promotion chances? Excitement is taking hold at Elland Road after Leeds United booked their first FA Cup quarter-final spot since 2003 with a convincing 3-0 win over Norwich City, guaranteeing them a trip to West Ham United for a place in the semi-finals. Doncaster Rovers grabbed a midweek point against Luton Town but are still in need of much more in order to pull themselves clear of trouble at the bottom end of the League One table – can they pull it off? Barnsley earned a hard-fought point against high-flying Cardiff City as well as a 2-1 win over Exeter City, but is their League One campaign in danger of fizzling out to nothing? Finally for this week, we turn to Stuart for his Player of the Week and Leon for his Team of the Week.

    On this week’s show, YP football writers Leon Wobschall and Stuart Rayner join host Mark Singleton to discuss whether there are any genuine causes for concern at Leeds United – following 1-0 defeats to Manchester City and Sunderland, both at Elland Road. Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover saga rumbles on, with the panel looking at the work that needs to be done when the club is eventually taken over – although it is proving tough to sell the Owls. Barnsley fell to a 1-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers meaning they are still some way off from putting together a timely run to make the play-offs. Elsewhere in League One, Doncaster Rovers also had a tough week, following up Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at home to promotion favourites Cardiff City with a 1-0 defeat against Stockport County in the semi-finals of the EFL Trophy. What next for Grant McCann’s inconsistent team?  Hull City maintained their push for promotion in the Championship with wins over QPR and Derby County, before taking a step back in a 1-0 defeat to Ipswich Town. How realistic is their push for promotion to the Premier League. This week, Stuart selects the best-performing Yorkshire Team of the week before Leon highlights the standout Player of the Week.

    The FootballTalk panel start this week’s podcast off at the Steel City derby, which saw Sheffield United come out on top with a 3-1 victory and in the process confirm Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation to League One.  What are the implications for the Owls and how long will it take for them to get back up to the Championship? The Yorkshire derby between Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United also comes under the spotlight, as does the Millers’ midweek trip to Bradford City – both games ending in defeat and increasing the relegation fears for Matt Hamshaw’s team.     On this week’s show, The Yorkshire Post’s Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton once again to go through the latest action involving Yorkshire’s leading clubs.  They start by casting an eye over events at the MKM Stadium last Friday in the FA Cup fourth round when Hull City hosted Premier League Chelsea, now managed by former Tigers manager, Liam Rosenior, who led his players to a comfortable 4-0 win. A 3-1 Monday night defeat at Championship title rivals Coventry City saw Middlesbrough slip from top spot with all eyes now firmly fixed on their next opponent, Oxford United.  Two wins – with two clean sheets – saw Bradford City boost their push for promotion from League One after suffering a short slump – do they have what it takes to secure either a top-two finish or the post-season. Leeds United brought the curtain down on the weekend for Yorkshire, but required penalties to get past FA Cup fourth round hosts, Birmingham City – earning themselves a date with Norwich City, the former club of Whites boss, Daniel Farke. And, after Doncaster Rovers got the better of League One Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town, what will be the impact on both teams’ 2025-26 campaigns? Finally this week, Leon picks out his top Yorkshire Team of the Week, while Stuart chooses the Yorkshire-based Player of the Week.

    On this week’s show, The YP’s football writers Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton and begin by analysing Hull City’s defeat at home to Championship rivals Bristol City and where it leaves a promotion push which, at the start of the season, was not predicted by many.  Huddersfield Town continue to impress under Liam Manning, strengthening their play-off claims after coming from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Blackpool before then going on to lose to League One rivals Doncaster Rovers in EFL Trophy after a penalty shootout, a result which saw Grant McCann’s team progress to the last four.  Finally, we look at Middlesbrough’s continued rise under Kim Hellberg, who saw his team go top with Monday’s 2-1 win at Sheffield United. As Boro dream of being in the promotion mix come the end of the season, has the result signalled the end of Sheffield United’s already-faint hopes of making the play-offs.  And, this week, Stuart determines the Team of the Week in Yorkshire, while Leon picks out his Player of the Week.
