Blind, 62, and My First 8K

For my 62nd birthday, I'm doing something I've never done before: participating in an organized race. I signed up for the 8K during Philadelphia Marathon Weekend, and I'll be walking the nearly five-mile course using my white cane. I explain what convinced me I could do it, why my biggest concern isn't my legs but my cane hand, and why finishing matters much more to me than my time. I'm also raising money for the National Federation of the Blind. If you'd like to support my 8K, visit https://www.david8k.com/. I also share an update on Ziggy. After finishing chemotherapy and then dealing with an intestinal blockage, he's finally starting to act like his lunatic self again. Top Takeaways I'm participating in my first organized race on my 62nd birthday. I'll walk the Philadelphia Marathon Weekend 8K using my white cane. My biggest physical concern is keeping my cane hand working for nearly five miles. I'm raising money for the National Federation of the Blind through david8k.com. Ziggy is in remission and showing encouraging signs of getting back to his old self. What You'll Learn What made me believe I could handle an 8K. Why walking thousands of daily steps isn't the same as walking a race course blind. The accessibility challenge I'm anticipating with my white cane. How a conversation at Wills Eye turned into an unexpected sponsorship. Why Ziggy's recent behavior has given us some much-needed encouragement. I Bought the Perfect Gadget—But Couldn't Use It

I bought Pocket because it seemed like the perfect device for me. It could record conversations, create transcripts, and pull out action items and to-do lists. The biggest selling point was the ability to use it with phone calls. Unfortunately, the hardware was not the problem. The app was not accessible enough for me to use the features I needed, so I returned it. That experience highlights a bigger issue I face whenever I consider new technology. A great device can become useless if the app that controls it is inaccessible. I also talk about a very different accessibility experience. When my Mac nearly ran out of storage and became difficult to use, ChatGPT helped me diagnose the problem and work through the fix in Terminal. It was a strong reminder of how valuable AI can be for people who are blind or have low vision. I also share details about the NFB of Pennsylvania scholarship raffle and give an update on Ziggy as he continues recovering after chemotherapy. Top Takeaways Accessibility has to include both the hardware and the software. As a blind consumer, I have to consider accessibility before buying new technology. AI can provide real independence, from describing images to helping solve complicated technology problems. Return policies matter because accessibility problems are not always obvious right away. What You'll Learn Why I returned Pocket. Why taking notes during phone calls can be difficult when using a screen reader. How ChatGPT helped me fix a major storage problem on my Mac. Why I believe AI can be such an important accessibility tool. How the NFB of Pennsylvania scholarship raffle works. How Ziggy is doing after chemotherapy.

Am I a Creep for Wearing Smart Glasses?

Are people who wear smart glasses creeps and weirdos—or are critics overlooking how blind people use this technology? In episode 300 of iCantCU, I respond to the growing backlash against Ray-Ban Meta and other camera-equipped smart glasses. While some people misuse the technology, blind and low-vision users rely on it to read signs, locate exits and restrooms, identify objects, and navigate unfamiliar airports, hotels, and convention spaces. I also recap my trip to Austin for the National Federation of the Blind National Convention. I talk about working the NFB of Pennsylvania exhibit table, selling chocolate-covered pretzels and handmade shawls, sampling Austin's food, waiting unsuccessfully for the Congress Avenue Bridge bats, and buying a FEELDOM backpack. Finally, I share an honest update on Ziggy as he approaches the end of his final chemotherapy round and discuss the difficult logistics our family will face when Liz returns to school. Giving Rokid Style Smart Glasses One Last Chance

In episode 299 of iCantCU, I give the Rokid Style smart glasses one more chance after a string of frustrating failures with voice commands, recording, and general reliability. With some strange iPhone issues possibly contributing to the problems, I'm heading to the Genius Bar before leaving for Austin and the National Federation of the Blind National Convention. I also talk about the word "blind" and why people should not be afraid to use it. Blindness is not a dirty word, and dancing around it often makes things more awkward than simply saying what it is. I also touch on why braille still matters, especially for blind students learning spelling, grammar, and the written word. Plus, I share updates on hiring a virtual assistant, preparing for the NFB National Convention, working on the NFB of Pennsylvania website and convention sponsorship forms, selling chocolate-covered pretzels in Austin, planning the Keystone Chapter's Coast to Coast Movement Challenge walk to Cira Green, and giving an update on Ziggy, who remains a golden menace even while going through lymphoma treatment.   Listen to the episode and learn more at https://www.iCantCU.com/299/    Links Mentioned Product links are affiliate links so that I may earn a commission. White Canes Connect Podcast In this episode of White Canes Connect, David Goldstein welcomes Rich Crawford for a wide-ranging conversation about blindness, independence, work, leadership, and the power of high expectations. Rich became legally blind at age 10 due to retinitis pigmentosa. Rather than lowering expectations, his parents encouraged him to try things, work hard, and figure out alternative ways to get the job done. That mindset carried him from public school to college, from community action work to a 41-year career in financial services. Rokid Style Smart Glasses Real World Test

In episode 298 of iCantCU, I share a personal update on Ziggy's ongoing lymphoma treatments and the unexpected emergency caused by a corn cob that may require surgery. It's been an emotional and stressful few days, and I wanted to bring everyone up to speed. I also take a deep dive into the Rokid Style smart glasses after using them during a trip to Baltimore. From navigation and video recording to accessibility frustrations and comparisons with the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, I break down what works, what doesn't, and where I think smart glasses are heading for blind users. I also talk about: Recording video while traveling as a blind creator Smart glasses and privacy concerns AI navigation features and step-by-step directions Why glare is still a major issue for low vision users Google's upcoming AI glasses Apple's rumored smart glasses Why I still think Ray-Ban Meta currently has the edge Listen to the episode and learn more at https://www.iCantCU.com/298/  Links Mentioned Product links are affiliate links so that I may earn a commission. Real Life, Real Loss, Real Progress

In this deeply personal episode, I share why it's been a little while since the last show, including the passing of one of my closest lifelong friends, Ken Stock. I talk about friendship, grief, and how loss changes perspective. I also give an honest update on Ziggy's lymphoma treatment, the emotional toll it's taking, and how life has a way of piling challenges on all at once. Then I dive into my progress with the Business Enterprise Program—what the assessments involve, why I'm excited about vending opportunities, and what the future could look like as I pursue entrepreneurship as a blind business owner.   Top Takeaways Grief doesn't follow a schedule, and neither does healing. Entrepreneurship often begins during uncertain seasons. Blind professionals can build and lead successful businesses. Resilience is built one challenge at a time. Sometimes progress happens while life feels messy.   What You'll Learn What the Business Enterprise Program is and how it works The assessments required to qualify as a blind vendor Why vending may be a strong business model How grief and stress affect momentum Why persistence matters during difficult seasons   Listen to the episode and learn more at https://www.iCantCU.com/297/ Links Mentioned Product links are affiliate links so that I may earn a commission. Rokid Style Delays and Choosing Ziggy Over Vegas

Episode 296 of iCantCU, I break down the Rokid Style Smart Glasses, compare them to my Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, and explain why I made the difficult decision to cancel a long-planned YouTube workshop in Las Vegas. On the tech side, I dig into the Rokid Style specs—38.5 grams, 10-minute recording limits, multiple aspect ratios, 12-hour battery claims, and AI integrations including Google Maps and large language models. I also explain why the lack of 16:9 recording matters to creators, how Rokid's silence after my order raised red flags, and why the Ray-Ban Meta currently wins by default. But this episode goes beyond gadgets. I share what's happening with Ziggy's lymphoma diagnosis, the realities of chemotherapy treatment, and how that changed my travel plans. The takeaway? Tech matters. Community matters. Growth matters. But sometimes the right decision is staying home. What You'll Learn How Rokid Style compares to Ray-Ban Meta in battery life, recording limits, and aspect ratios Why 16:9 video still matters for serious YouTube creators The risks of ordering hyped tech without responsive customer support What living with a dog undergoing lymphoma treatment really looks like How to make tough travel decisions when family needs come first Listen to the episode and learn more at https://www.iCantCU.com/296/ Links Mentioned Product links are affiliate links so that I may earn a commission. Ray-Ban Meta Glasses Took Me From PHL to Podfest

In this episode of I Can't See You, I break down how the Ray-Ban Meta glasses became a real travel tool—from PHL to Podfest in Orlando. I used "Hey Meta, what's in front of me?" to read signs, confirm gates, navigate MCO, and find my way around the Renaissance at SeaWorld and the conference sessions. Along the way, I share a funny airport moment when people thought I was talking to them, plus the soft pretzel mission that finally paid off (pretzel braid, Apple Pay, done). I also recap Podfest highlights—AI, video workflows, and new strategies like Pinterest—while sharing where the tech nailed it and where it still annoys me. White Canes Connect Podcast Episode 148 In episode 148 of White Canes Connect, we share the powerful General Sessions remarks of David DeNotaris from the 2025 National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania State Convention in Harrisburg. Speaking from a lifetime of experience, David reflects on growing up with Braille, discovering the Federation, and the profound influence of Dr. Kenneth Jernigan on his understanding of blindness and self-respect. Through humor and deeply personal stories, he explores what it truly means to believe that it is respectable to be blind—and how that belief unlocks confidence in using Braille, mobility tools, technology, and advocacy skills without apology.
