Water Margin Podcast: Outlaws of the Marsh

I heard that this is a classic of Chinese literature and listened to a few episodes and then bought the book. The book is about governmental corruption, good people forced into bad situations, honorable and sociopathic characters throughout. I alternated between the podcast and the book, but love the podcast more for adding additional information, context, and humor. Every time you think the story can’t get more outrageous it does. It’s like Canterbury Tales on steroids. My thanks to the podcaster John Zhu for all of the work it took to make these episodes.

This podcast is clearly well researched, thoughtfully planned and carefully executed. The episodes are made entertaining and understandable even if you are not familiar with the source material. Each episode is short enough to listen to when you don’t have a lot of time but engaging enough to make you want to hear more. I will definitely explore this channel’s other podcasts and I look forward to learning more from Chinese literature.
