    Episode 373: 'Mockbuster' (2026)

    We have spent years talking about how important The Blair Witch Project is. We discuss the pros and cons of the latest reimagining of the iconic found footage classic. And we are definitely interested. Plus, the latest internet horror fad that Hollywood wants to adapt into a movie. And while it does seem a little silly to us, they do have a strong director attached to it. The Asylum has been putting out grade-A quality B movies for a long time. Sharknado may be their most well-known, but their specialty are mockbusters like Tomb Invader and Top Gunner. We could not wait to take a look at their inner workings. Mockbuster does much more than that. Sure, there is plenty of footage from The Asylum library. And yes, all of it is amazing. The interviews with the people at the top of the company are also great. They know the score and are funny, entertaining, and informative. But it is the documentary’s subject that is the beating heart of the film. Anthony Frith is one of the most charming people we have ever seen and we enjoyed watching his journey. Mockbuster ended up being an unexpected feel-good watch thanks to Frith and all of the incredibly supportive people featured. On top of all that, we get to see how a movie from The Asylum gets made!     Episode 372 'Ebola Syndrome (1996)

    It has been a bad week for people who enjoy physical media. 'GTA VI' is not getting a physical release, Playstation games are not getting physical releases after next year, and Sony deleted over 550 movies from user libraries. We also talk about the awesome summer box office. Sometimes it seems like the days of good old fashioned extreme horror are gone. It was fun to look for movies that everyone talked about but few people had actually seen. In today's world, it is easy to find any movie that you have heard about. And the worst offenders are nowhere near as bad as they are supposed to be. At least that is our opinion. But can you blame us? When we hear that movies like 'Terrifier' are supposed to be extreme horror, it is hard not to think this way. We decided it was time to take a look back. We literally went to a category that have previously made us feel uncomfortable. 'Ebola Syndrome' is a Category III Hong Kong movie that checks off all the boxes for extreme horror. This movie has all the trigger warnings. Despite the constant racism, misogyny, and assault, there is a shockingly good film here. It is funny, creative, and well-done. But is it worth watching?     Episode 371: 'Hungry' (2026)

    The Evil Dead franchise holds a special place in our hearts. It is a part of our youth and brings back lots of pleasant memories. There has also never been anything like it. We talk about how the new Evil Dead movies are continuing to live up to the awesome legacy. We also spend some time discussing how two horror icons have finally come together. There have been a ton of sharksploitation movies over the decades since Jaws invented the sub-genre. On this show alone, we have gone to Venice, Mexico, and Malta in search of great sharksploitation. It has been a mixed bag, to say the least. Along with shark movies, there have been tons of killer animal flicks. We have even managed to cover a few. Hungry provided us with something new. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first hippo horror movie. Being the first means there are some pretty glaring missteps. But when the film is firing on all cylinders, it is something to behold. Did we just witness the first good use of AI? Can you find hippos in the wild in North America? How important are well written characters in an “when animals attack movie”? Why did we talk about all this when there was a killer hippo running rampant? We discuss all this and more.     Episode 370: Mid year recap

    Time moves more quickly now than it ever has. It was not that long ago that we were talking about a new show executive produced by the Duffer brothers. About a month later, it is one and done. As someone once reminded us, we are just two guys who watch movies. Production budgets and domestic grosses are only a passing interest to us. Still, there are some things that catch our attention. Were we right to say that Michael would get to $1 billion? And what does the future hold for Obsession? There was a major change to our humble little podcast this year. We decided it would be in our best interests to be a little more focused. To that end, we went to just covering one movie each show. Despite this, we still managed to cover twenty-three movies over seventeen episodes. And twenty of them were released in 2026. So, what do we have to talk about? And will we get as worked up as we did last week? The horrors of high school, zombies, musicals, buff nuns, and grindhouse adjacent fun.     Episode 369: 'Find Your Friends' (2026)

    Aside from Art the Clown, what has Damian Leone contributed to horror? We also come dangerously close to gatekeeping while we discuss what extreme horror is. Plus a discussion on the 28 Years franchise somehow leads to a talk about The Bride. We spend a good amount of time talking about Find Your Friends. About 98% of it is spent on the film’s writing. It does not take long to realize this is not a good thing. There have been plenty of movies that have led to a discussion about the writing. There has been nothing like this one. The movie clearly deals with sensitive subjects. But it does it in a way that downplays the circumstances, the victim, and its heady themes. It is so bad that we have to constantly reiterate how we are not s****y men. (Who knows? Maybe we are. But that’s a different matter.) How bad was the writing for Find Your Friends? So much so that we were constantly filing in story beats to make it make sense to us. And even then, we were still frustrated by what we had seen. This movie had all the ingredients to tell a powerful story about how women are treated. It instead was content to erratically work towards its admittedly wild finale.     Episode 368: 'Chum' (2026)

    Horror has always managed to do well at the box office. The way of thinking has always been since the movies are so cheap to make, it is easy to profit of of them. This year has been especially good, with indie horror doing a lot of the heavy lifting. It is clear there is a lesson to learn from this, but will Hollywood learn the right one. (Spoiler alert: no.) Zack Snyder is one of the most polarizing directors around today. That takes in a lot of territory since pretty much everything fits that description nowadays. We talk about his latest project and why we are interested in it. Does this make us Snyderbros? Chum does not reinvent the wheel, but it does not have to. It is a simple revenge story filled with some of the best shark attacks we have ever seen on this show. We talk about the use of AI and how less can sometimes be more. A great sharksploitation movie is more than just a kick ass shark, however. It is not a question of how poor the writing in Chum is; the question is does it ruin all the good the rest of the movie does.     Episode: 367: 'Speed Demon' (2026)

    Over the years, we have seen and discussed how horror has become more acceptable in the mainstream. This week we talk about two of the most striking examples of this. One is interesting while the other is just straight up weird. But both have us interested. The idea of a nun who has lost her faith is not strange for an exorcism movie. Having the first introduction of said nun has her completely nude and coked up after a threesome is a little different. After showing off this incredibly buff nun, the awesomely titled Speed Demon takes off from there. The film is an example of less being more. It does not reinvent the wheel and tells the simple story of a person trying to overcome their personal demons in order to defeat a literal one. And it works thanks to its setting and quick pace. But it is in the closing moments that Speed Demon truly shines. In a whirlwind of revelations, the most powerful people in the world become entrenched in Sister Lu’s world.     Episode 366: 'This Is Not a Test' (2026)

    Obsession has become one of the biggest and most talked about movies in America. So much so that it has actually been the number one movie at the box office during the week. Obviously, this will change over the holiday weekend, but it is still nice to see it doing so well. We also talk about what the future holds for it. It seems like we have been talking about Crystal Lake for years. And every once in a while, we have a little bit more information to discuss. This time we actually have a release date for the Friday the 13th spinoff. And it is just around the corner. Zombie apocalypse movies are a staple of horror. They can do a lot by doing a little. To break away from the formula, there have been a number of movies in the sub-genre that have tried to do more. This Is Not a Test tries to bring a depth rarely seen in zombie films. This ends up ruining the whole thing. At the very least, you would figure that people who like these types of films would enjoy it. The opening certainly gives that impression. After all, it is a generic zombie movie. Then you realize that there is a big piece missing from what is otherwise a ho-hum release.
