Make Me Better with Sarah Gailey

Sarah Gailey is one of those authors you can't quite pin down. They published their first novel in 2017 and since then, they've published ten more, along with dozens of short stories, essays, and comic books, including multiple original series. While their work is largely speculative and frequently veers into horror, no two stories approach their subject matter in the same way. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that Gailey is so engaged with the world around them. I certainly got that impression in our conversation. What started as a discussion of their latest novel, Make Me Better, quickly veered into territory as diverse as the politics of transformation, the appeal of outsourcing your values, and the mechanics of representing time dilation on the page. I loved conversations like these, where you really get to see into the mind of an author. Sarah's mind is especially generative: after talking to them for an hour, I'm convinced they could find inspiration in a dust bunny under their couch. I hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed making it. Special Guest: Sarah Gailey.

The Score with C. Thi Nguyen

It seems like everything we do these days gets boiled down to metrics, from GPA to fuel efficiency to sleep quality. But what is all that data actually doing for us? And what is it doing to us? That's the question philosopher C. Thi Nguyen set out to answer in The Score. Along the way, he found himself unpacking modern notions of authority and objectivity, the difference between scoring systems in games and scoring systems in real life, and how humans construct meaning (and why we can't use numbers to do it). In our conversation, I talk to Thi about what it means to live in an era of big data, and how we can hold on to what we value amidst the quantitative noise. I hope you enjoy it. Special Guest: C. Thi Nguyen.

Against Tech Oligarchy with JS Tan & Clarissa Redwine

JS Tan and Clarissa Redwine are legends in the tech worker movement. For the last decade, they've been involved in almost every major organizing campaign in the tech industry. So when Clarissa told me they were writing a book about the future of tech organizing, I jumped on the chance to talk to them. Against Tech Oligarchy, which comes out on September 15th, chronicles the history of the tech worker movement and the response to worker organizing by tech bosses. In the process, it shows just how much power tech workers have, and offers up a roadmap for how they can use that power to hold tech accountable to the people it is meant to serve. Our conversation spans the origins of the tech worker movement in Trump's first presidency, the challenges tech work poses for tech organizing, and the need for organizers in the tech worker movement to embrace class conflict moving forward. Special Guests: Clarissa Redwine and JS Tan.

Episode 61: Charlie Jane Anders - LESSONS IN MAGIC AND DISASTER

Charlie Jane Anders is an award-winning, best-selling author of speculative fiction based in the Bay Area. She is the winner of the 2017 Nebula, Locus, and Crawford awards; winner of the 2020 Locus Award; a co-creator of the transgender Marvel Comics superhero, Escapade; a founding editor of the science fiction website io9; a co-host, with Annalee Newitz, of the podcast Our Opinions Are Correct; and the current science fiction and fantasy book reviewer for The Washington Post. In this episode, I talk to Charlie Jane about her latest and most personal novel yet. Written during the pandemic, partly as a way of processing her own father's death and her mother's subsequent isolation, Lessons in Magic and Disaster is about a 20-something graduate student in English Literature who teaches her grieving mother how to do magic...with unexpected consequences. In our conversation, we talk about the hidden history of the 18th century novel, LGBTQ activism in the 70s and 80s, the role of community in writing, and so much more. Episode 60: Christopher Blackwell and Deborah Zalesne - ENDING ISOLATION: THE CASE AGAINST SOLITARY CONFINEMENT

Christopher Blackwell is an award-winning journalist currently incarcerated at the Washington Corrections Center, where he is serving a 45-year prison sentence for taking another human’s life during a drug robbery (something he takes full accountability for). Deborah Zalesne is a legal expert and law professor at the City University of New York School of Law, where she teaches contracts, corporate law, and commercial law. Together with Dr. Terry Kupers and Kwaneta Harris, they wrote Ending Isolation: The Case Against Solitary Confinement, which weaves together first-hand accounts of incarceration and solitary confinement with legal and medical analyses to illustrate the devastating impacts of solitary confinement on survivors, their families, and the communities they are part of (both inside and outside of prison). In this episode, I talk to Debbie and Chris about the history of solitary confinement, the legal frameworks that prevent reform from taking root, the challenges and abuses incarcerated individuals face when asserting their rights, and how the realities of solitary confinement differ from how it is portrayed to the public. They also discuss the Journey to Justice Bus Tour they have put together, in partnership with Unlock the Box and Look 2 Justice, to help educate the public about the experience and impacts of solitary confinement.

Episode 59: Alka Joshi - SIX DAYS IN BOMBAY

Alka Joshi spent 10 years working on her debut novel, The Henna Artist, before it was published in March 2020, just before the world locked down as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, a few months later, Reese Witherspoon selected it as a Reese's book club, changing the trajectory of Joshi's life and writing career forever. At a time when many debut artists were struggling to connect with their audiences, Joshi was zooming into libraries, bookstores, and book clubs big and small, and finding her people in the process. Five years later, Joshi has published two sequels to The Henna Artist and a new standalone novel, Six Days in Bombay, a coming-of-age novel about an Anglo-Indian nurse who travels Europe to carry out the final wishes of one of her patients. In our conversation, we talk about her whirlwind success, her fascination with the years leading up to India's independence from Britain, the artist who inspired her latest story, and her next project.

Episode 58: Kirsty Capes - DAUGHTERS

In this episode of Story Behind the Story, host Clara Sherley-Appel talks to British novelist Kirsty Capes about her latest book, Daughters, which was recently released in the US following its debut in the UK in 2024 (under the title Girls). Daughters follows Mattie and Nora, whose neglectful and abusive mother was the acclaimed artist Ingrid Olssen. On her deathbed, Olssen asks them to destroy her work, so when Olssen’s sister arranges an exhibition of her art in San Francisco, her daughters feel compelled to put a stop to it — despite their difficult and complicated feelings about their mother. Our conversation spans Capes' early success as a novelist, her experience in the foster care system, how she brings levity to difficult topics, and more.

Episode 57: John Gibler - TORN FROM THE WORLD

In this episode of Story Behind the Story, host Clara Sherley-Appel talks to journalist John Gibler about his 2014 book, Torn from the World: A Guerrilla's Escape from a Secret Prison in Mexico. Torn from the World tells the story of Andrés Tzompaxtle Tecpile, a member of an armed resistance group who was forcibly disappeared and tortured by the Mexican military long after the government claimed it had stopped using these tactics. Gibler has been reporting on social movements in Mexico since 2006, when he accompanied members of the Zapatista movement on The Other Campaign. That experience shaped his understanding of the role of journalists and journalism in resistance movements, and since then, much of his work has focused on chronicling these movements and the violent means states use to suppress them. In addition to Torn from the World, he is also the author of Mexico Unconquered: Chronicles of Power and Revolt (2009), To Die in Mexico: Dispatches from Inside the Drug War (2011), and I Couldn't Even Imagine that They Would Kill Us: An Oral History of the Attacks Against the Students of Ayotzinapa. While he lives and works primarily in Mexico, his reporting has taken him all over Latin America.
