    Find Your People

    What does it look like when a community of believers is truly, wholeheartedly devoted to something greater than themselves? Acts 2:42-47 pulls back the curtain on the earliest days of the church and shows us a picture that is both ancient and urgently relevant. These first followers were not casually committed. They were devoted to the apostles' teaching, to one another, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. And the result was staggering. The Lord added to their number day by day. This passage invites us to ask ourselves a hard but beautiful question: what are we actually devoted to? Devotion is not a feeling. It is a pattern, a posture, a persistent attention we give to the things that matter most. When we root ourselves in the Word, press into genuine fellowship, and keep the Lord's Supper central as a proclamation of Christ's death and resurrection, we are not just maintaining religious habits. We are positioning ourselves to be used by God in ways that outlast us. The early church did not grow because they had the right strategy. They grew because they were devoted to the right things, and God honored that devotion with transformation that rippled outward into their cities and across history.

    Be The Good Kind

    What kind of ground are we? That is the searching question at the heart of the Parable of the Sower in Luke 8:4-15, and it is one that cuts right to the core of our spiritual lives. Jesus describes four types of soil, and in doing so, he paints a vivid portrait of the different ways human hearts receive the Word of God. The hard, well-worn path represents a heart that has been trampled down by life, by pain, by habit, until the Word simply cannot take root. The rocky ground speaks to those of us who receive truth with genuine excitement but have never developed the deep roots needed to survive when trials and persecution come. The thorny, weedy soil pictures a heart that is genuinely growing but slowly being strangled by the cares, riches, and distractions of the world around it. And then there is the good soil, the heart that receives the Word, holds it fast with honesty and sincerity, and over time bears extraordinary fruit. What makes this parable so compelling is that Jesus is not just describing four types of people. He is describing four conditions any one of us can find ourselves in depending on the season of life we are walking through. The invitation is clear: we are always the soil, and the question is whether we are willing to do the hard work of preparation, of breaking up what has become hardened, clearing out what is shallow, and pulling up what is choking us, so that the Word of God can do in us everything it was designed to do.

    We Are Here to Serve

    What does it look like when a church stops being a place people simply attend and becomes a community where everyone has a role, a purpose, and a place to belong? That question sits at the heart of this message, which walks us through the biblical foundation for servant leadership and the office of deacon. Drawing from Romans 12 and the broader New Testament, we are reminded that serving is not optional for the follower of Christ. It is woven into the very fabric of what it means to be the church. The Greek word behind our English word deacon paints a vivid picture of people who raise dust by moving, by going, by doing. Not busy for the sake of busyness, but purposefully and supernaturally serving the body. We are challenged to see that while not everyone holds the office of deacon, every one of us is called to serve. Just as every believer is called to share the gospel even if they do not carry the spiritual gift of evangelism, every believer is called to serve even if they are not formally set apart as a deacon. This message invites us to ask ourselves honestly where we are placing our hands and our hearts in the life of our community.

    Psalm 131

    What does it look like to have a soul that is truly at rest? Psalm 131 offers us a surprisingly simple yet profound answer. In just three verses, King David lays out what we might call a three-sided secret to contentment, and it begins with something most of us resist: purging our pride. David openly confesses that his heart is not lifted up and his eyes are not raised too high, acknowledging the boundary between who God is and who we are. This is not a posture of defeat but of wisdom. When we stop straining to occupy space that was never meant for us, something shifts. Peace becomes possible. From there, David moves into one of the most tender images in all of Scripture, describing his soul as a weaned child resting quietly with its mother. This is not childishness but a chosen, mature childlikeness, a deliberate return to dependence on the One who sustains us. And finally, David calls us to hope, not the wishful kind, but the kind that waits and fully expects God to show up. Together, these three movements, purging pride, choosing childlike faith, and receiving the reward of hope, form a path toward the kind of settled, contented soul that this restless world is desperately searching for.

    Psalm 125

    When life feels unstable and the world around us seems chaotic, we need to be reminded of where our true security lies. This message takes us through Psalm 125, one of the ancient songs of ascent that God's people sang as they journeyed upward to Jerusalem for worship. The physical climb mirrored a spiritual reality—they were reorienting their hearts toward the Lord. The psalm opens with a powerful image: those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, unmovable and enduring forever. This isn't about having perfect faith or never feeling shaken; it's about recognizing that our steadiness comes from God's faithfulness, not our own strength. The psalm reminds us that just as mountains surrounded Jerusalem, the Lord surrounds His people—not watching from a distance, but present in the midst of our struggles. We explore five anchors for our journey: peace, presence, pressure, path, and plan. The message confronts our tendency to grow too familiar with holy things, to walk past God's grace as if it's ordinary ground. Through vivid imagery from Athens and Mars Hill, we're challenged to examine whether we've forgotten the weight of what we've been given. Pressure reveals what we're truly trusting in, and this psalm calls us back to the foundation that cannot be moved—not our ability to control outcomes, but the Lord who holds us. When wickedness seems to have power and compromise starts looking reasonable, we need to remember that God surrounds us not only to protect us from what's around us, but from what's within us. The ultimate anchor is found in Jesus, who stood in our place, stretched out His hands in love at the cross, and walked out of the grave to prove that sin, death, and wickedness will never have the final word.

    Psalm 130

    This powerful exploration of Psalm 130 takes us into the raw reality of what it means to cry out to God from the depths of our lives. We're confronted with an uncomfortable truth that many of us need to hear: faith isn't about removing our circumstances, but about learning to walk well through them. The message challenges the prosperity gospel mentality that dominates much of American Christianity, reminding us that the New Testament calls us not to constant comfort, but to endurance and faithful suffering. The psalmist's cry from the depths isn't just ancient poetry—it's a roadmap for when life strips away everything we've built and leaves us face-to-face with our desperate need for God. We learn that the depths reveal what comfort conceals, that pain exposes what we actually trust, and that unexpected circumstances bring unexpected reactions. The question becomes intensely personal: when pressure hits, where do we run? Do we run to relationships, accomplishments, or vices to soothe ourselves, or do we run to the Lord? The profound insight that 'whatever you soothe with, you will serve' cuts to the heart of our spiritual condition. This isn't about judgment but about honest self-examination. The passage teaches us that intimacy with God often begins in the depths, not on the mountaintop, and that we must learn to replace our thoughts with His thoughts by immersing ourselves in His Word.

    Psalm 127A

    This powerful message calls us to examine the foundation upon which we're building our lives, drawing from Psalm 127's timeless wisdom that unless the Lord builds the house, those who labor work in vain. We're reminded that our American spirit of self-reliance and pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps can sometimes become a spiritual hindrance when we forget that true success comes from knowing our role and trusting God entirely. The sermon challenges us to move beyond one-time repentance to a lifestyle of continually turning and returning to God, much like a GPS constantly rerouting us back to the right path. We're called to six essential practices: knowing our role and trusting entirely, acting accordingly rather than anxiously toiling, repenting readily as a way of life, worshiping willingly when we see God's presence, connecting continually like branches to the vine, and serving unceasingly with open hands. The message from 2 Chronicles reminds us that national healing begins not with pointing fingers at others, but when God's people humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from their wicked ways. This Fourth of July weekend reflection helps us celebrate our earthly freedom while recognizing the greater deliverance secured through Christ's sacrifice, calling us to live as temples of the Holy Spirit rather than self-made monuments to our own achievements.

    Psalm 127B

    This powerful message draws us into Psalm 127, specifically verses 3-5, where children are described as arrows in the hands of a warrior. The central truth is profound yet simple: arrows don't aim themselves. Just as an arrow requires a skilled archer to form it, aim it, and launch it toward its target, our children—whether biological, adoptive, or spiritual—require intentional guidance toward Christ. The message challenges us to recognize that parenting and spiritual mentorship aren't passive activities but require the heart of a warrior. We're called to be diligent in forming these young lives, repeatedly teaching them to love the Lord with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. The imagery is striking: arrows must be carefully crafted, not simply found in nature. They need fletchings, properly weighted tips, and straight shafts—all requiring time, skill, and patience. Similarly, our children need us to invest deeply in their spiritual formation, surrounding them with the right community, practicing target shooting at Christ Himself, and ultimately releasing them to fly true toward God's purposes. The reminder from Deuteronomy 6 echoes throughout: we must teach these truths diligently, when we sit, when we walk, when we lie down, and when we rise. This isn't a one-time conversation but a lifestyle of spiritual formation that shapes the next generation of Christ-followers.
