20260816 6PMp JB Loyalty The Gift of God

20260816 6PMp JB Loyalty The Gift of God Reading: Deuteronomy 6:1-19 How do “Loyalty Cards” work?  By rewarding the “Loyal Customer”-- when the customer shows their loyalty, they get a reward. But that is not theway it works with God.  In contrast, God, the giver, gives the gift, and His action calls forth loyalty from us.   In our passage tonight, the people are on the edge of the Promised Land, which the Lord (Yahweh) is giving to them, and they are warned to not go after other gods, but to remain faithful (loyal) to Yahweh.   Moses says there is no other one like Yahweh. They have seen that when they left Egypt, under God’s deliverance.  Therefore “Love God with all your heart, all your mind and with all your strength”. It’s about commitment. Wholehearted commitment is commitment of the whole! The challenge is to us, lest we get distracted. The danger for Israel is that they may forget, and the danger is that we may forget.  The challenge of peer pressure:  The pressure of being like every one else around us, instead of being loyal to God.   The challenge of hardships: When life gets hard, remember your God!  Stay loyal to God.  It is NOT the time to rebel against God.   It is NOT time to forget, it is about staying loyal. It’s not about us being good enough.  It is about what Jesus has done, for us.  It’s about trust in the work of someone else … Jesus.  Speaker: John Batten. ---------

Some do not want him to beking.  The servants behave differently, and when the king returns,  he deals witheach differently. 20260621 6PMp DT On the Road to Wholehearted Trust

202606216PM DT On the Road to wholehearted Trust Luke18:  15-43 Mary was amazed that God should choose a teenager to be the one who should bear the child who was to be the Saviour of the world. He has scattered the proud. He has lifted up the humble. The theme of humbleness continues. In a sermon in Luke 6: Jesus says this: Blessed are you who are poor in spirit, for yours is the Kingdom of God. This theme continues through the gospel. In the passage tonight, it says, people were bringing babies to Jesus, the disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said, let the little children come to me, and forbid them not, for the Kingdom of God belongs to of such as these.  Jesus teaches here, of what our attitude needs to be to enter his Father’s house.   A child in its infancy is receptive and trusting. To inherit eternal life, we need to be receptive of God’s word. Luke’s gospel tells of “a certain ruler”, who asks Jesus, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” But when he heard the answer, he went away sad! Speaker: David Tyndall.

20260614 6PMp CD When Life is unfair, Does God Care?

202606146PMp CD When Life is unfair, Does God Care? Luke18:1-17  In ancient Israel widows, orphans andforeigners were singled out in the community to be taken care of!  Jesus told a parable about an unjust judgeand a widow who persistently sought his help. Jesus contrasts the unjust judge’s behaviour with God’s actionwhen Jesus returns. One day, Jesus will return, and he will judge theearth.  In a second parable, Jesuscontrasts two people with different reputations. One a Pharisee and the other atax collector. The tax collector’s prayer was heard right away.  When life is unfair, God does care!    Speaker:  Chris Donald.

20260607 6PMp JB The Kingdom of God in Your Midst

202606076PMp JB The Kingdom of God in your midst ReadingLuke 17: 20-37. When thePharisees ask Jesus, When will the kingdom come? What will be the signs of theSon of Man coming? he re-directs their attention, stating that the Kingdom ofGod is in their midst.   God’s Kingdom is God’s people under God’s ruleand God’s blessing.  We too may ask thequestion, when will all God’s promises be fulfilled. In Luke’s gospel we seethat the promises were already being realised, being fulfilled in Jesus coming.  Small in the beginning but growing like amustard plant to become a great tree.   Jesus then switches to the time predicted in Daniel 7. Jesus explains that when he comesit will be clear.  It will be like the days of Noah and the flood, and of Lot and Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus will return and then it will be too late. Are the normal things of everyday life, distracting us from living for the King and for the Kingdom? We may find it uncomfortable to live for the Kingdom, and to share the message with others. Let’s get uncomfortable for others and for Jesus. Speaker: John Batten.

20260531 6PM CD Healed Cleansed and Saved

202605316PMp CD Healed Cleansed and Saved Reading:Luke 17:11-19. Jesus is withhis disciples between Samaria and Galilee, on the way to Jerusalem when ten menwho had leprosy met him and asked Jesus to have pity on them.  Jesus tells them to go and show themselves toa priest and as they go they are healed. But one of them, a Samaritan, seeing he was healed, turns backand throws himself at Jesus’ feet to thank him. Jesus asks where are the othernine that were cleansed? And then says to the “foreigner”, your faith has savedyou! Gratitudeopens us up to Grace. This passage teaches us how to open ourselves up toGrace.  When we seek to be thankful, weopen ourselves up more to his Grace.  Let’s practice gratitude and open ourselves more to Grace. 20260524 6PMp JB Called to Forgiveness

2020524 6PMp JB Called to forgiveness. Reading: Luke 17:1-11. Corrie Ten Boom, author of the book, “The Hiding Place” told of an instance when she was confronted with the need for forgiveness in her heart, for prison officer from the prison camp she and members of her family were held in during the second world war.  “Forgiveness is about the greatness of your king, not about the greatness of your faith.”  In the church, we need each other ... to watch out for one another, to rebuke, to repent, and to forgive. In looking to the cross where Jesus died to gain our forgiveness, we can see the greatness of the grace with which we are forgiven, and how we are called upon to forgive one another. Speaker: John Batten.

20260517 6PMp CD Rich and Poor in Mercy

20260517 6PMp CD Rich and Poor in Mercy Reading: Luke 16:19-31  What comes to mind with the word Pharisee? The Pharisees wanted to stand out for God, but with time, they drifted from their original intent.  Jesus tells a parable about a rich man, and a beggar.  In contrast in life they both die, and in death their situation is also contrasted: In Abraham’s bosom, and in Hades. This parable is about mercy. The rich man had the opportunity to show mercy. The message is also clear in Proverbs 21:13 “Whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered.” Speaker: Chris Donald.
