A More Perfect Union: Delma Jackson III on Intersectionality and Justice in America

In this episode of Philanthropy Speaks, we revisit a workshop the Community Foundation of Greater Flint co-hosted this summer called A More Perfect Union: From Isolation to Intersectionality, held as the nation approached the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Host Lynn Williams, Director of Equity and Community Engagement at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, sits down with Delma Jackson III, founder of the Sankofa Project for Social Justice and senior fellow at the Center for Whole Communities. Jackson, a facilitator, writer, and lecturer on social justice who has brought his work to campuses and conferences across the country, grounds the conversation in Sankofa philosophy, the idea that the past lives with us in the present and guides how we build the future. Tune in to learn how intersectionality connects histories of indigenous genocide, slavery, and Jim Crow, why Jackson argues a more perfect union cannot be built through denial, and what it really means to move from isolation toward solidarity. From somatic practice to street-level rebellion to the everyday work of checking our own biases, discover why Jackson believes justice work starts wherever you already are.
